Begin by placing a pre-cut piece of carpet padding onto a stair tread. Ensure it fits snugly on the flat surface of the tread. Use a hammer tacker to securely attach the padding to the wooden step. Apply multiple staples around the perimeter and in the center to prevent the padding from shifting or bunching up over time. Ensure the padding is tight before moving to the next step.
