Prepare a carpet pad for each stair tread. The depth of the pad should be the depth of the tread plus three additional inches. The width of the pad should be two inches narrower than the width of the runner. Measure, mark, and cut the carpet pad according to these dimensions. Then, cut off the two front corners of each pad at 45-degree angles. Use the first cut pad as a guide to cut as many additional pads as needed for your staircase. Center the pad on the bottom tread, aligning its long edge with the riser. Leave a fingertip width space between the pad and the riser. Place a staple in the center and on both sides of the pad to secure it. Smooth the pad over the tread and over the nose (the front edge of the tread). Pull it tight, then staple the pad to the underside of the nose. Repeat this process until all treads are covered with padding.
