Test fit the cut bullnose piece on the stair tread, ensuring its small lip correctly catches over the front of the riser for a snug fit. This bullnose has approximately a 1/2-inch overlap onto the tread. With the bullnose in place, measure the remaining depth from the live edge of the bullnose (the finished surface, not including the part that locks into the plank) to the back of the tread against the riser. Remember that most houses are not perfectly square, so measure this distance at both ends of the tread. Manufacturers often recommend a 3/8-inch expansion gap between the flooring plank and the back riser. Account for this when determining the final plank width to be cut.
