Steps
Measure the Total Tread Depth Over the Bullnose
5 minutesStart by placing a straightedge flat on the stair tread, pushing it flush against the vertical panel at the back (this is called the riser). Now, use your tape measure to measure from the back of the tread, forward over the curved 'bullnose,' to the very front edge. This single measurement is crucial because it tells us exactly how much material is needed to hug that curve perfectly, ensuring a secure fit and a clean look.
Watch: Measure the Bullnose StairConfirm Nosing Dimensions and Step Width
5 minutesFirst, check the 'nosing overhang'—that's the part of the step that hangs over the riser below. For a safe installation, this should be between 3/4 and 1 1/4 inches. Also, make sure the rounded edge has a radius no more than 1/2 inch to prevent any potential trip hazards, giving your family peace of mind. Finally, measure the total width of your step from side to side. Our custom-made-to-fit treads are designed to match this full width, giving you complete coverage and a truly polished finish.

5 minutesRemember that our plush, high-quality carpet treads add a bit of thickness. To ensure your final overhang remains within the safe 3/4 to 1 1/4 inch range, you may need to factor in the pile height. If you have a curved or 'crescent-shaped' starter step at the base of your stairs, don't worry! These unique steps require a special touch. We offer custom-made solutions designed to perfectly match their specific shape, ensuring every step in your home combines safety and style.
