The final step focuses on the essential wiring and connectors required to link all components of the solar system. For outdoor wiring from solar panels, use outdoor-rated cables or individual THHN/THWN wires housed inside electrical conduit for protection. MC4 connectors are recommended for solar panel connections due to their secure, weatherproof, and easy-to-use design (they provide an audible click when connected correctly). For wiring battery banks, heavier gauge wire (e.g., 2 gauge) is necessary due to the higher amperage, and specialized 3/8-inch or 5/16-inch copper lugs and heavy-duty crimpers are needed for secure connections. The overall system connection for an off-grid setup involves solar panels connecting to a PV combiner, then to an inverter, and finally to batteries. For a grid-tied setup, the solar panels connect to a PV combiner, then to an inverter, which then feeds into an AC disconnect box and finally into the main circuit breaker panel with a bidirectional meter from the utility company. This enables direct power from solar or selling excess power back to the grid.
