Picture Hanging
About This Project
This DIY project outlines the steps involved in securely hanging a picture frame on a wall. It covers selecting the right hardware, choosing the optimal placement, and ensuring the frame is level and stable.
Steps
Determine Picture Placement
5 minutesHold the picture frame against the wall at the desired height and position. Step back to assess the look. You can also use a piece of paper cut to the size of your picture as a template to easily move it around and find the best spot. Consider the height relative to furniture and other wall decor. For eye-level hanging, the center of the picture should be about 57-60 inches from the floor.
Mark the Hanging Point
3 minutesMeasure the distance from the top of the picture frame to the hanging point (e.g., wire, D-ring, sawtooth hanger) on the back. Then, measure that same distance down from the top edge of where you want the frame to sit on the wall. Make a light pencil mark at this spot. If using a level, you can also mark the top center of the frame and then use the level to extend a horizontal line.
Select Appropriate Hanging Hardware
5 minutesIdentify the weight of your picture frame. Check the wall type (drywall, plaster, concrete, wood). Select hardware rated to hold at least double the weight of your picture. For lighter frames, a picture hook and nail may suffice. For heavier frames, consider screws with anchors (e.g., toggle bolts, screw-in anchors) appropriate for your wall material. Adhesive strips are an option for very light, small items and temporary installations, but verify their weight capacity and suitability for your wall surface.
Install the Hanging Hardware
5 minutesFor a nail and hook: Hold the hook against the wall at your mark and gently tap the nail through the hook's opening with a hammer until it is secure. For a screw and anchor: Drill a pilot hole if required by the anchor type, insert the anchor, and then drive the screw into the anchor. Ensure the hardware is flush with the wall and does not wiggle.
Hang the Picture
2 minutesGrip the picture frame securely on the sides. Align the hanging hardware on the back of the frame (wire, D-ring, etc.) with the installed hook or nail on the wall. Gently lower the frame onto the hardware until it rests securely. Ensure the frame is hanging straight.
Level the Picture
3 minutesPlace a level on the top edge of the picture frame. Adjust the frame by sliding it left or right until the bubble in the level is centered, indicating it is perfectly horizontal. Make minor adjustments as needed. Some frames may need to be lifted off the hook slightly to adjust.
