Step 5 · Connect and Adjust the Chain

Attach the clip on the end of the new flapper's chain to the flush lever arm, ideally in the same hole the previous chain was in. Adjust the chain's length so that there is only about 1/2 inch of slack or slackness. If the chain is too tight, the flapper will not seal properly. If it is too loose, it won't lift high enough for a full flush or could get tangled underneath the flapper. If the chain is excessively long, use wire cutters to trim the excess links to prevent tangling.
