Step 3 · Extract the Linkage Assembly
With the overflow plate free, gently and slowly pull the entire linkage assembly straight out of the overflow pipe. The linkage consists of connecting rods and, at the bottom, a weighted brass plunger or stopper. This entire assembly is often the cause of the blockage, typically being clogged with a large mass of hair, soap scum, and other debris. Pull carefully as it can be a tight fit.
