Step 5 · Restore Power and Test Operation

Now it's time to see if your work was successful. First, ensure all tools are removed from the sink and the area is clear. Turn on the cold water tap and let it run into the disposal's drain. Go back to the electrical panel and flip the circuit breaker back to the 'On' position. Finally, go to the wall switch and turn on the garbage disposal. It should now spin up to speed without humming. Let it run for 15-30 seconds with the cold water to flush out any remaining debris. If it works, you have successfully fixed the jam. If it continues to hum or immediately trips the reset button again, the jam may be too severe or the motor may have failed, requiring a professional.
