What happens here

This video showcases a farmer aerating and turning a large manure pile for composting on his farm using a Bobcat skid-steer loader. The primary goal is to introduce oxygen to the pile to speed up the decomposition process, which is crucial for creating usable compost for gardening. While the initial request was for 'Cleaning > Post-Construction & Renovation Cleanup > Exterior Debris Sweeping > General Debris Removal using Industrial Sweeper', this video specifically details an agricultural practice of composting organic waste using heavy machinery, rather than general debris sweeping or post-construction cleanup activities. The farmer also briefly demonstrates an antique manure spreader and discusses future farm plans, including goat births.

morning guys it's Josh Tony Ridge farmer welcome to the farm vlog today we're going to be turning the giant mountain of manure here I call this manure Mountain or otherwise known as mountain and we're going to go ahead and turn it and basically what we need to do here is rewrite the manure okay so by Riera rate I mean introducing more oxygen to this big pile of composting manure we can't put this manure on the garden yet because it's not fully composted and it would be too hot which in other words means it would not work it would kill the plants it would be too hot too much nitrogen content not broken-down enough in order to grow vegetables so come along with me today we'll show you what we're doing and we'll tell you about why we're doing it and what we're doing if you're interested in stuff like this it's kind of fun just to see the steam rolling off this thing I tried to get out early early this morning when it was still cold so you could really see the steam but you'll see it here in a second it's gonna be like 65 degrees today what a beautiful beautiful day guys so come on along with me we'll have a little bit of fun all right [Music] new h-bomb so part of the morning routine here on the farm is to feed the puppy dogs and we got the puppy dogs all fed but I went and looked at their water we're gonna check their water and cover your eyes if you don't want to see something gross Oh a rat fell in their water last night so we got to wash up the dogs water bucket that's kind of gross just part of farming so folks if you haven't seen it yet this is our manure spreader and we'll show you about that too we'll take you around and show you how the manure spreader works here in a second so I've been getting lots of questions from folks about a map have you put together a map yet of the farm so that we know where the heck you are cuz we see all over the place and we don't know where the heck you are well I kind of did a little map today just a tiny map to show you where we are so our house is right here and we're right in behind the house and the tobacco barns right in here and there's a little bit of woods that you can see right there that's between the house in this field right here and we call this the middle field okay and then the other one is the upper field and then we call that one the big field which is the 25 acre field by the pond so if you catch a next vlog will be over in the big field from the 25 acre field and we're gonna roll out some big oil hay bales on the places where the timber crew drove through the field we want to reestablish some grass there and reestablish some biomass in the soil right there be sure you catch the next log we're gonna be out there and me and mrs. sarni Ridge rolling around thousand-pound hay bales should be fun but enough about the map we're gonna throw this in the compost too let's just go over here and we'll show you the manure spreader and how it works we're not gonna be spreading any manure with the manure spreader today but I wanted to show you how it works so basically this manure spreader is called a Galloway and it's a Galloway manure spreader I don't know how old it is at least 50 years old so we got two levers on here one lever is for speed and the other lever there it is the other lever is for engaging it and not engaging it so you can disengage this thing and it pulls with a hitch so we can pull it with a gate or no problem which is pretty awesome and we can also pull it with a tractor the tractor might be a better option just because I can put it in a low gear and just cruise nice and slow let me show you the features so there's a chain drive right here and it pulls these bars along and you load this thing up with manure and it slowly pulls the manure through to this area and this is meant for busting up like large clots and straw and hay and then at the end of it it has big old paddles and these paddles really really whip they spin and whip and they smack those big clots and bust them up out into the field pretty cool piece of equipment guys these things go for about a thousand bucks it doesn't look like a thousand dollars to me but that's what they go for and eventually we'll have our manure mountain back here behind me spread out with this manure spreader out on the farm in places that need a little bit more biomass in the soil a little bit more fertilizer and a little bit more manure so let's talk about what we're doing here today I piled this manure up right here this big old pile about seven and a half feet tall and I kind of did it just for fun with the hopes that it would start to compost and heat up and it did heat up but it's heating up very slowly what I did was I piled it too big I piled it too tall which doesn't allow for enough moisture to get inside that manure and break it down so what we're doing today is starting a row and I already started it yesterday with this row right here is gonna be about six six or seven feet wide and about four or five feet tall and we'll just start a row and then later on as time goes on we'll take that row and we'll flip it so we'll keep flipping this probably four times throughout the year and that will help to speed up that breakdown of that manure and get that carbonaceous matter ready to put on our garden let's get the scoop and this steamy stuff up it's pretty fun to watch I've got the GoPro mounted on the skid steer so we'll get it all steamed up and have some fun with it so let's get busy the folks what I'm doing here is I'm raising the budget way up high so they can I dump it it breaks up all those little clots and big clots and stuff and it helps more oxygen into [Music] so folks I had to get you a close-up of this stuff okay I'm gonna dip my hand into the steamy hot composting manure it's so awesome come check it out this is what you call black gold right here guys look at the steam coming off of it it's just hot it's just really really hot I mean it's almost too hot to hold hope the camera is doing it some justice just to see all the steam rolling up off of this stuff we're going to go ahead and we're going to make two rows right here so we got one row here and then we're going to start a new row right there and we'll keep this compost turning and you can do this at home too I'll tell you about how you can do it at home once I get my work done here so folks while I'm doing this I'm taking compost from different areas of this pile right here and I'm putting it out basically I want the drier stuff to be on the top and the wetter stuff to kind of be in the middle so that I get a good mixing and the whole purpose of turning this compost is so that you get a good mix okay so you want to fixing it until it breaks down into black gold around our food treats and in our garden alright guys so we got done we met our goal today what we wanted to do was take that big old manure pile and make it into two manure piles okay so this will help it to compost a little bit faster now you can do this at home on a smaller scale just throwing out your kitchen scraps and stuff and we've got a little composter out there that we use worms to compost with we're going to get a little bit better setup with that and we'll do that in a future vlog I'll show you how all that works out we can't do worms in this because it just gets too hot okay so it would kill the worms it's a little bit too high of a nitrogen content for worms to survive so we'll let this keep composting throughout the winter we'll go ahead and turn it again in about a month maybe a month and a half and I've got a big long composting thermometer and I'll stick it in there once it gets nice and hot it'll probably get up to about a 180 degrees kill all those weed seeds kill all those grass seeds and then we'll turn it again once it starts to cool back down and that's how the compost works so guys thanks a lot for joining me here on the farm I appreciate you come on back and see me just thought I'd do a little talking about compost now you might wonder did that stink no it didn't stink there was no like manure smell or anything like that except when I get really close to the bottom it was really really wet which tells me it needed to be turned so you want your compost pile to be moist but not soggy soppy wet anyhow thanks for joining me guys come on back and see me on the farm click that like button click the subscribe if you're not already subscribed and click that little bill it'll notify you when I post a new video we'll come back we'll play in some poop again alright whoa [Music] I just want to let you guys know ah my butt got wet I just want to let you guys know in the next week or probably two weeks once it gets really really cold the goats will start having babies okay so we've got three goats that I know of that are pregnant and they're starting to bag up let me show you this black one right here it's about to bust hey little lady you about to pop so you can consider this your goat education for the day when I go it's getting ready to have a baby the milk sack starts to get a little bit bigger the nipples get a little more prominent and you could tell by the backside of the goat the vagina starts to swell a little bit we got a little bit of swelling we've got some growing going on on the teats so we're gonna end up with a baby goat here in the next few days so stick around come on back and see me we'll show you the baby's gonna be cute
