Trouble strikes the wall rebuild

What happens here

Begin by assessing the site and understanding the cause of the previous retaining wall's failure. The previous wall failed due to improper construction, specifically placing large boulders on smaller, unstable ones, leading to shifting and collapse. The new wall needs to be engineered to withstand ground movement, such as that caused by freeze-thaw cycles. Clear any existing debris and stones from the area where the new wall will be constructed. This often involves using heavy machinery like an excavator and a skid steer. For this project, the new wall will be built about 3 feet in front of the old wall to create more space.

Goal: Prepare the site for new retaining wall construction and understand engineering principles.

Tools and materials

  • Dump Truck — Delivering and removing large quantities of soil and stones
  • Excavator Daewoo 75V — Clearing the site, digging trenches, and placing large boulders
  • Skid Steer Kubota — Moving stones, dirt, and providing support
