dug out whatnot okay [Music] Johnny every everyone's wondering where Sam went to here's a Sam here's a [Music] Sam what do you do tearing this out would be a nightmare you got lose the sidewalk build it up so corrected yeah Whole Nine Yards [Music] believe all right good morning everybody we cracked open this yesterday had some issues and what not we found we got a footing but at least this side we can get our Rock in to our height so we're not too worried about this side this side we hit at some higher footings so we're going to do some stuff Alex is getting a jackhammer and we're going to try and break up some of this this and then we need it for down here for breaking up this concrete wall CU this is all coming out now they cut down this huge tree that was here this morning and then we're coming all the way through here and then coming back against the building right here so all this is getting redone changed around and and that's what we're planning on doing today so then hopefully we can get our base in and start getting wall built hopefully by the end of this week which I'm hoping it's Thursday right now so we're hoping to get start getting some stuff in by Friday hey but you all know how certain projects go it's like you get going get going get going and then boom all right so now if you've been following Along on this job site you've seen that we've ran into a lot of unexpected things that's where the magic word of change orders come in now I first learned about change orders from one of my competitors a long time ago but not in a good way let me explain change orders can be a leverage tool especially on a commercial site I learned because what my competitor would do is he would underbid every single job I would look at my numbers cuz it was a open bid so you get to see what everybody else is bidding I would turn my numbers in which would make logical sense for the project that we're doing and then I would look at all of the competitors and he consistently got job after job after job now when I said we were one of the five largest contractors in the midwest I mean specifically for retaining walls not for anything else and so when you know your numbers you got them dialed in it starts to make you question what is going on and I learned pretty quickly that this contractor was actually betting on having change orders let me explain on a commercial site you have so many moving parts that you bid very specifically to meet a certain amount of criteria on that job anything and everything that's outside of that criteria becomes extra work change order and what this contractor would do is he would gouge the heck out of his out of the main contractors because he wasn't making any money on the main job but on the change orders which are almost inevitable especially on bigger jobs he was making a killing charging extra so that word change order at least in commercial construction is a very lucrative means to an end the regrettable part is a lot of smaller contractors don't understand what a change order is and instead of doing a valid change order when one is required they eat it oh we'll just throw that in oh we'll just throw this in oh we'll just throw that in and what happens is it's Bread and Wine you as the contractor think hey you know what I gave this customer this thing and it took me 5 hours and it cost me an extra 200 bucks and I had to run to the store and the customer doesn't have a clue what you did for them so you need to validate your work and don't be afraid to charge what you're worth I'm not saying do what this other contractor did and price gouch but what I am saying is stick to your guns make sure that you put your bids into a way that clearly defines the limits of your work I will install retaining wall up to 300 F feet I will grade out an area up to 20x 40 that way if you're going 30X 50 the customer can understand we you got to put this into a means that the customer can get it the customer can understand oh yeah 20x 40 you bid did 30X 50 and yeah I have 300 Square ft and now we're going 350 square ft you don't have to eat these things because eating all of those little things doesn't seem like a big bite right then and there it's at the end of the year when that Big Bite can destroy you but let's get back into this job cuz there's a lot going on and we're going to show you how we deal with some valid change orders all right so we finished getting everything dug out and whatnot okay Johnny right Sammy every everyone's wondering where Sam went to here's a Sam here's a Sam all right we're just having fun out that work but all right back to seriousness uh we got everything excavated it they wanted us to just go right over this so we got it down to where we could it for having our having our us have a comfortable base is going over the top of this we had to get down to a certain point so there was a lot of a lot of screwing around with this now we got our grades all set and all that stuff now it's just we're ready to put Rock in and on this side and then we'll start basing this out and then go that way Timmy's over here on this side starting to dig cuz Sam's got this all based out and ran out of Base ping area so now we're just going to start digging this back out and this footing in here FY deep to get our Rock in so we just went over the top of it this over here we dug down well we're going to clean this up a little bit more but dug down to get our get our 6 in of rock depth behind the stone and then we'll probably get two to three in some of these higher spots but it it just couldn't get the top of this to come off so that's that's then this footing goes down three four blocks and it's on top of another footing so that's a a Fross footing under our wall what do you do tearing this out would be a nightmare you got lose the sidewalk Build It Up soil corrected yeah a whole nine yards but yeah that would be a they don't want to hold the whole nine yards 10 yards you would be 10 [Music] yards now when you're out on a job site you are the pro you're the one that the customer is depending on to help make the best decisions so when something unforeseen comes up what I've learned to do is to give my customer a couple different options I don't like to overwhelm them and give them six seven eight different options because it just adds into the confusion you've got to remember that the reason you were hired in the first place is because the customer is depending on you for guidance on their project but it's not your job to guide their financial decisions so when a change order comes up and it could hit their purse strings you've ultimately got to have the customer sign off that it was their decision because it's their money does that make sense [Music] all right we're wrapped up for the day it got our both of our walls based out quite a bit on either side we're just going on both ways but yeah then we just got to do this and that and that's what we got done to the rest of for the today so that's it what's this Wei the Royal we all right good morning everybody yeah something little dirty on the lunch so what what I like to do when we're working at houses with like kids and stuff I'll get some crayons and them like write their name on you know back of the block or draw a picture on the bottom of the Caps or something like that they got a uh kindergarten out here for preschool something like that so we talked to a couple of the teachers that run it yesterday and asked them if we left some blocks and a couple of caps out if the kids wanted to dry on the dry on them and we'll put them in the wall or whatever and uh they thought that was a great idea we got a couple boxes of crayons and some couple blocks and some caps and we'll leave them back there for them and let them do their little Doodles on there and we'll throw them in the wall up front [Music] that's why I like my guys is because they care and that's why I make these videos because I don't have to give away all of my secrets but I also realized why would I take all of this experience to the Grave with me and not share it with somebody if I can make your guys's life better that is the whole point of these videos when I started out making these videos I wanted them to be entertaining and educational that was my whole goal and my favorite thing is when I'm at a trade show or a job site or gas station or Menard or I don't care where and one of you guys comes up to me and says Stan I just want to say thank you keep making those videos you help me launch my business or St you help me price out my my lawn care company or you help me understand this or that or some something like that that's been my whole goal all along and so when I see my guys doing this that's awesome it just makes me proud of them so I hope you guys enjoyed these videos this job is not even close to being done we got a whole lot more going on with this project and I'm going to walk you through every single one every single phase of this project and try to share as many knowledge bombs with you as I can along the way so let's keep this one rolling so here's an interesting side note do you remember that contractor I was telling you about that would lowball them jobs get his foot in the door and then make all of his money on change orders that guy went to jail because not only was he screwing over his General Contractors the people that he was working with he was also screwing his employees screwing them over I mean and what I mean is he would tell the government that he was paying them prevailing wage when he wasn't and guess what happened he got caught he went to jail for I think a year I think he went to jail for and then he was not allowed to bid on state run projects for two more years then after that time zone was up bada bing bada boom guess who's back on the books baby and guess who's winning job after job after job that guy I can't make these stories up [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] all right we're done for the day we're calling it early today yeah he uh got everything tarped up all that stuff over there is tarped and we're ready for rain that's supposedly coming this weekend well it was supposed to and then now it's supposed to just come Monday so we're not sure what Monday is going to hold but we got most of our stuff tarped and covered where we're working and where stuff needs to stay dry a little bit you all packed up now you're ready to go pull some tarps off and do some more no no I'm ready to be done we're [Music] done God bless and go get him you guys [Music]
