Start-to-Finish 3 day DIY Floating deck - BIG REVEAL!

What happens here

The presenter is not satisfied with the idea of using flexible composite decking as the top rail, as it would require significant underlying support. He recalls a unique live-edge wooden handrail he made for his house years ago from rough-sawn oak found in the woods. He sets out on an ATV to search for more of this specific type of wood in an old lean-to (a 'refrigerator graveyard') and then an old barn. He successfully retrieves several pieces of over 100-year-old rough-sawn oak from the barn, which he intends to use for the new handrails.

Goal: Find suitable rough-sawn oak for custom live-edge handrails.

Tools and materials

we don't have a top rail for this deck and so we've got to get a little bit creative okay i'm still not sold on this idea of what we're going to do for a top rail it's got to wrap all the way around it i want to show you a handrail that i made that frankie and i made a while back and we're going to scout and see if we can duplicate it so everyone thought i was crazy when i wanted to do this but you see this it's live edge i found this in the woods let me show you what it looks like this is i think this is amazing looking wood and you know it would be more maintenance but if i can find that wood that would make an amazing but i would need a lot of it let's go in search off hi lucy let's go now frankie suggested we use the moisture shield for the top rail of the deck but i'm not sold on that look i kind of wanted something more custom and so we're going to go back out into the woods where i found that top railing for that banister and see if there's more of it the material for that banister actually was part of the roof framing on this old lean-to we got one good one we could pull that one out else do we got i don't think it's gonna be enough so i'm gonna go check the barn to see if i can find any hidden gems in there all right well this is the farm i grew up on let's see if this old barn we may not have enough wood out there but maybe in here this looks pretty safe doesn't it of course i always like to leave loader arms hanging by a strap all right oh what do we got look at that don't fall on me look at that oh that looks kind of amazing i bet that would be flipping cool rough sawn oak i don't know anything in here we can use oh hey welcome to our uh this is where we did all our repair work this was it right here nothing in here stands out so i'm going to pull that oak down and bring it back to our site and see if we can use that all right well we got him down let's take a look at what we're going to be dealing with that don't look too bad i like how it's rough hewn
