What happens here
This video details the process of preparing a compacted lawn area, applying a pulverized screened black dirt topdressing using skid steers, and incorporating it into the existing subsoil to promote deep root growth and overall lawn health. The steps include de-compacting, rough grading, spreading the compost, and mixing it properly to avoid soil stratification.

(12,961 characters)so this is the move we use to decompact the ground to get get it so that we can grow grass this is what i was talking about when i said we were gonna re-till it up so we'll go through the whole site and get it all graded and then get this top prepped and ready for vegetation the craftsman tool set or is this milwaukee craftsman's out we got a problem i was just trying to replace that quickly just squeaking so bad on me i sucked up a wire i i have no idea where it even came from next you know i just seen it flinging around underneath the hydro bucket i picked it out of there that's not the end of the world i mean it will it it's hard on it but it's not the end of the world there's nothing better than getting the nail out of the tire yeah that that one actually pumped was it in the tread yeah it wasn't in between right no it was right that's got enough meat yep and i didn't hear no hissing good good are we good or do we need to lube this up some more alex did you get the reserve replaced no the ones i have are the wrong size ah okay they're seven sixteenths minor five sixteenths okay that's a good way to cut your finger i think oh yeah all right i'm gonna have to get a get a uh that knife slips and your thumb was right in the way that ain't gonna stop it much well that's that's where i got that cut right there what do you think you would have learned alex wants to bring in a extra load of dirt looks like we had a little issue with the fence huh pick all that up before we leave reassemble this fence get this path graded out get this garbage hauled away and he wants to bring in oh we can do it we can do that we come across uh hard to get out of a loader when you only got one arm tooth isn't it because you wanted to grab with that other arm and you knew you couldn't because you'd wreck that shoulder it's a different animal man when you're used to two arms and you got one in a one in a bum you know this may not be a soaker but i think we're gonna get cooled off if anything it's gonna make this that's better to pack yeah i say we go for it we just get her laid out what i wanted to show you was the grade so this is before we laid the black dirt out this is where we'll start to then put the black dirt over the top of it and then we will hydro bucket it into the subsoil so that everything incorporates together and we don't we don't have stratification in the layers of soil okay cool beans um i'm i'm good with that it looks probably great it's good to me yep yep she's properly graded the only question is do you want us to try to use one load of black dirt over this area in our opinion you would need a second load to really do uh to do it the way i think we all would feel comfortable but we could also respect your budget and go well it's just going to be a thinner well you know what i mean that's it it's up to you anew i think you're going to get better quality out of having the second load in there especially seeding yeah because then again i'm not a an agriculture guy so i'm just thinking that i may have to solve this seed may not work with this so if i'm do you think that's uh that's a correct uh understanding a seed may not work for this larger area and that i will need salt in the future do you think no i've sweep seeded yards way bigger than this seeds can seed works for really large areas where people don't want to spend the money outside because sod's more expensive than seed yeah quite a lot more expensive than seed but i'm just wondering is it more expensive than another load of doors oh yeah oh god yes okay so sound will be more expensive than the second order five times as much okay take take what we're charging you for your stock at five six seven times multiply it it's not really expensive if we can get it probably yeah four pallets or so just a rough estimate or so four pallets yeah oh if we went all the way down that way yeah you'd have yeah you'd have five or six so what 15 a couple grand roughly for for assad for stock uh yeah easily okay all right then uh let's put the door if you think that we need a second load of dirt to adequately follow this area yup then we can get some mixed in up there and see it'll take better for them because okay you saved i mean by not by using that space for those guys you saved on your driveway oh yeah right you know so yeah where we're working down here that's a much it's that's a light band it's coming down or it is kind of coming down yeah but it's breaking up as it comes down so i mean uh you know it's going to be hit or miss because yeah again i love you guys but i'm thinking if it's a bad storm then it'll be fine sitting here no sitting away okay and then we'll spread it because we want to do a good job you want to spread it nice so no i'm very happy with what you guys have done so yeah i'm confident what you guys will do is it will also be good so i'm very i'm very happy with the quality of work that you guys have done i think what we're going to do is get this one spread over here and then if it's too wet to do the second one we'll just stockpile it come back he's going to leave a skitty out here might call one of them out and then yeah they'll be here to agree with we're going to take the blood we just put on off that way we're not running five miles one way to just come back and go around the corner to grab our black dirt we can get the black dirt brought in and get that grated out and try to beat the weather a little bit there's not much in there you're good john pull forward couple feet yeah there you go still does a pretty good job with that gimpy wig though doesn't he see how we get it nice and flush right up in there love it i love it look at him go it's almost like he's done this once or twice before so he should pull that back cause we only got two loads look at this gorgeous you can't tell me that is a beautiful black beard that's pulverized okay let's talk about black dirt for a moment when you guys as a customer if you're a contractor or a customer i'm gonna talk to you both ways right now pulverize screen black dirt i want you guys to get specific in understanding what your material is topsoil is just that it's the top layer of soil rocks roots bugs weeds seeds everything is in it it's top soil if you're a customer and a contractor says hey we're bringing in topsoil understand what you're getting and clarify to make sure you get it you're getting what you want pulverize screen black dirt is basically it it's been pulverized it's been screened so that it means it's been broken up into these fine little particles [Music] and it's been run through a screener so you're not going to get big rocks it's the best of the best but this needs to be incorporated into the ground below it we don't want to stratify i was talking i knew earlier and i said stratification and what that means as you can see this is a great example we've got this layer and right now it's stratified the black dirt lays on top of it okay and the two shall never mix using this technique yeah we got a grease we got a zerk that needs a little love don't we so that's where the hydra rake comes in and now he's gonna mix that right into the grade below it got to be super careful when he backs off that edge right now he's hydrating it bass backwards starting to bring everything together and loosen everything up what tim is doing is tim is getting all of the other grades finalized tim technical tips just tweaking everything so we have two different machines and they're both working on two actually different parts of the project although they're doing the same job so tim is working on the subgrade that's the brown dirt we want to get that all wrapped up so that it's perfect we need the brown dirt to be absolutely the way we want all of the grades to flow because that's what's going to ultimately dictate which way the water runs on the site the black dirt that we're bringing in afterward that's just to grow the grass so we set the grades with the bronzer then we bring the black dirt in and incorporate that down into the brown dirt so that everything flows together and that the reason we incorporate everything together is that it gives the grass a better ability to grow deeper roots and then that can fight drought conditions as well the deeper we can get that black dirt the better that grass is going to do long term let's do a last walk through i've already done one with the new he's pretty happy this is ready for seed we've hydro raked this we did have to spread that black dirt make it go further than we normally like to do i like to layer it in thicker but you know what it uh it is what it is so you can see how we've got everything graded everything is now flowing down this way see the grade from this angle and then as we walk out this way we've still got a little bit of fixing to do on the path from this point out this has been hydro seeded or hydra raked ah we used the hydro bucket on it so that we could at least get it ready for seed and as we go through this way we'll do this and then we'll do the outlet as well looks like tim just got done cleaning the street and the last thing that has to be done is this black dirt right here needs to get spread just in this area and just in time for the rains to help get things cooled off how'd that go the rain feels good it's weird i like it i haven't felt rain like that and how'd that work with that mask it's good i just over the years man can't take the dust like i used to so yeah he hit him while he was power raking had his face mask on power broomed the street looks like alex is getting ready to go we just finished up this little bit of grade only i walked it with a new everything is good he's happy with it all right he's happy with it all the only thing we've got to do is touch up the path on the way out i told him with the power rake what's he going to do next to his pine tree are you going to landscape that probably yep just no reason to mow down in there just throw a bunch he wants he wants them all he's happy that he's got a path now he's never been able to get down there to get to his back fence line he couldn't get anything back there so he's pretty happy for him that's a lot man i told him we made that black dirt go as far as we could get it to go up about two loaves in that little area yep you want to spread this out or you want me to do it whatever you want to do man why don't you do it yeah they're fine original grade how high are we here well it blends though tim this is a hill i'm higher on this end than that end so i would just smooth grade it out i'm gonna go get this out of the rain yeah i'll take one of them a bucket [Music] we want to secure this bucket tonight to us both just park everything right here on the street [Music] yeah we'll just put the bucket in the other bucket this is one of those jobs that we finished our portion of the work but it doesn't mean the job is completely done which sometimes can bite you in the butt and so we're not responsible for re-establishing the vegetative cover and when i say it sometimes can bite you in the butt sometimes our customers opt to put a little bit of sweat equity into a project whether that's seeding siding installing their own mulch or doing whatever it is it's their job site but sometimes we can't close a permit out until everything is absolutely completed now on this project we were able to get our sign-offs on on the portions of the job that we did but you're gonna see in an upcoming video where that wasn't possible and five years later this bit me right in the butt what happened was we built another retaining wall years ago and we had one permit inspection required and that was a final and the problem is is we weren't contracted to put the final vegetation in and so the customer had to do the final inspection after they re-established their lawn and that never got done and five years after the job is done an inspector calls us up and wants us to go out and start to dig up the retaining wall to start to prove where the geo grid is to start to show where the drainage aggregate is and what what a catastrophe that one turned out to be and you're gonna actually see that that's probably one of the most interesting scenarios i've had happen in a long time but that's in another video that's coming down the pipeline hope you guys enjoyed today's fun and adventures and we've got more of that where it's coming up where that's there's more where that came from so some of you guys want to see that sketchy slope that big massive sketchy slope we were working on well they built a nine foot tall retaining wall with a 90 degree corner on one side and more than a 90 degree corner on the other side so a really awkward inside corner and that's coming down the pipeline as well so we got a lot of really cool stuff happening hope you guys enjoyed this ride god bless you guys and we'll catch you on another one
