Simple Way To Apply Wall Texture. DIY Sun Valley Texture.

here we go we are right here live in a house and we're going to show you how we go about applying skip trout or Sun Valley texture or even Monterey texture or Santa texture I I mean it's called a bunch of different things it has a lot of names a lot of different names but we call it Sun Valley texture it's a very simple texture to apply right here you can see it on the wall right here I got journeyman John with me today and we're in this entry way right here applying it we had a previously painted surface right here John right and what was wrong with the surface well it looked like maybe at one point it had been wallpaper wallpaper was removed and then somebody put like a sponge faux glaze kind of a look over it but that glaze left a bunch of of white marks and and the plan was to paint it but all of those marks would show up so the homeowner wanted to have it textured anyway they talked about Orange Peel but what they really wanted was Santa Fe texture so now we're putting well not Santa Fe Sun Valley whatever name you want to call it but that's what we're putting up now it's just interesting cuz where we come from here in boy Idaho the Treasure Valley there is a city a town called Sun Valley and it's um a resort town where some wealthy people live and maybe the texture that is around here was originated there maybe that's why they call it Sun Valley not sure but we do call it Sun Valley texture and you can call it whatever you want to but it's a simple textured apply we didn't have to do any priming did we John no we didn't do any priming we just knocked down any loose pieces uh we repaired a couple of spots on the wall with some hot mud just to kind of flush it all out and make it nice and flat but then we're good to go and we're going to be applying this um topping compound right here and this is USG sheetrock topping anything you want to say about that besides topping John topping joint compound no so what we typically do is we're going to take a sponge or two full of water and we're going to drop that in the bucket and add a little bit of water because you don't want to use it right out of the bucket or right out of the box you want to add a little bit water to make it a little bit easier to work with so we'll add a little bit of water we'll use a paddle and we'll stir that all together and that's the product we're going to be using cuz this comes premixed right this is premixed can you buy it not premixed dry I don't think so I mean maybe sure you could I suppose from somewhere uh what we have available to us is it's usually in a box or it's going to be in a tub so we really don't know if you can buy it dry or not where you live we are not drywallers we just play one on TV we are just painters apply Sun Valley texture and like doing it cuz it's fun so um a couple of simple tools we got this John what is this funny little thing called that is called a hawk a hawk like the bird um not yeah it doesn't fly but it is a simple you could make it fly I guess if you throw it but it's a simple drywall tool and your mud or topping sits on top of that it does and this um little thin knify sharp thing what do we call this that is called a TR it's called a TR and then we have a few other things um let me grab a few other things we've got this round little scraper thing this is used to scrape the mud out of um a 5 gallon bucket and it's round for a reason it is it conforms perfectly to a 5 gallon bucket because I don't know about you but if you've ever tried to take a 4in knife and scrape mud out of a bucket that is kind of a pain it just doesn't work too well so somebody created that little handy tool that works pretty good we do have um a drill and we use a little thing to mix up our mud right here if it needs to be mixed up that would be our um handy dandy little stir stick but it's called something better than that other options besides a hawk and a TR you could use a mud pan and a knife I like the Haw and TR better I have an easier time making this finish with the Haw and TR but it really just is a personal preference thing um I think guys like in Canada like Hawks and TRS and guys in the US like pans and knives and why there's a difference no one will ever know I think I've um learned using the textures using these two tools right here but I've always done really small projects I think doing for doing larger projects for me I think it's just um I'm learning with this thing and it's a lot faster you know just I think for me to just get and work with the mud off the top of the hog so there's the simple tool they don't cost very much they're very inexpensive and anybody can do this with just a little bit of practice so we got a wall up here we're going to show you how we go about applying it and this method in the look it is kind of um it's I would say individual every single individual person is going to apply it differently and so the look is going to look different so if I applied Sun Valley texture in a house and then next door John applied it in a house it it's going to look a little bit different cuz John's vision of Sun Valley texture might be a little bit different than my vision of Sun Valley texture and the tools that I apply it with just a simple thing if if you apply it with this knife versus this knife the size of it your texture could look a little bit different so um you're not going to get it exactly how we do it unless you practice practice practice and use the same tools any other thoughts there yeah so typically if you're working on a patch or you're trying to match something else that's where it can be a little tricky because you're trying to emulate what somebody else did and figure out how they went about it and they could have watered their mud down a little bit more or maybe not as much or they might have used you know different patterns working it around so it really is kind of a trial and error thing when you're looking at someone else's texture and trying to match it but essentially the form and rules are all basically the same for how to get it up there it just becomes a matter of how much and where you work it and one of the nice things about this stuff it is just water-based mud and it cleans up easily if something goes wrong it's easily to wet that wall and wipe it off again if it's been previously painted or you can sand you can do things it's very very forgiving so don't panic if things go wrong if you drop some on the floor we've got drop cloth down here and we've got um red rosin paper but if you drop some on your carpet Don't Panic it's not like paint it will come out easily so but use drop cloth and use the proper tools good good idea if you're working overhead to use eye protection cuz um I will tell you I actually dropped the whole glob of drywall topby mut into my eyeball once and that hurts and it scratches your eye and it's painful for quite some days so wear eye protection but here we go we're going to go right up here we got a wall right here and we're going to show you what it looks like to apply this stuff here we go bam all right John here you go you're getting ready to apply this so you've got your hawk in one hand and you have your TR in another hand mhm so the you know this does take a little bit of thinking about making sure you keep this balance this mud you can actually hold it upside down like that and it's not going to go anywhere unless you really water it down and then you'll have some more issues so when you're loading up your trout what you're going to do is you're just going to basically cut it like dough like that you're going to scoop it backwards you'll flip that whole Hawk upside down and then you'll just balance it on that trout try not to drop it on the drop cloth like that backwards right up like [Music] that just like that so now we're going to take the mud after we've got it up on our trout and we're just going to spread it around in some random patterns and you just kind of keep an eye on your Hawk make sure that you're you're keeping it pretty well balanced and then you'll just work on the TR work and the big thing is just in some randomized patterns you just want to move that mud around onto the wall and the first task is going to be just to get mud on the wall so usually I'll work through most of a hotk p edges there and then I'll end up having a bunch on the trout there you'll just take it from the corner scrape it onto the hawk so it's like that and then that's the side I will load up from and that keeps whatever mud is left right in the middle of the hawk and then I'll just let the the excess mud kind of kick back there so now that I've got a nice kind of thick uh kind of thick thin coat it's all moved around um we're trying to recreate voids like are in the rest of the house that the the client wanted match so I'm just going to knock some of these edges down spread some of this stuff around on the wall you want to get it so it's got at least kind of a similar thickness to how deep you want those voids to be and then what I'm actually going to do is I I'll actually take the TR and I'll push in and pull away and create some mountains like that cruising around and then knock those down with the TR going in some different directions and the key to all of this is that you want to use just randomized patterns because you're going to be pulling those voids in different directions and you don't want it to look like you've pulled everything in One Direction and One tip I found that kind of helps um depending on the look you want is the faster you move it creates a bit different of a look directions and look at it I want a little few more voids up top right and then I'll smooth some of this out and the texture we're trying to match they never went back and sanded it out it all they just kind of left it built up and in a little bit rough so we'll probably end up taking our dustless sander and trying to knock some of these Peaks down and cleaning off some of the the rough sides just to make it look a a little more uniform when we're all done and so work your knives around or your TR around and then I might take like the edge of my TR and pull a scoop out like that and then come back and bring that up and over and that's going to create one of those voids that we're looking for in these this texture that's really all there is to it and then it's just a matter of working your way down across the wall try not to let your TR Edge like that dig in but it's pretty easy to fix up just like that so you'll work your way up and down the wall wherever you're working and just try to stay consistent As you move along with your pattern and then it's always ideal if you have either the same person or two people who have done a lot of work together working in the same area because I might apply the texture slightly differently than someone else and what you don't want is a section that looks one way another section that looks another and so on and so forth and then you have issues with everything kind of matching and looking uniform cool so there you have it how to do Sun Valley texture simple and easy any other tip and tricks you want to give John you know just be patient with yourself take your time when you're doing it it is just mud so look you can either wipe it off with water or you can get used to sanding so neither of which are too bad I guess but it it is it's just fun you work it around you play with the texture you get a look that you like and then you just replicate that look across your your surface if you get some on your clothes it just washes off wearing light makes you look cleaner and so today was a bad day to choose to wear dark glue but regardless do you need to feed the hawk you do not need to feed the hawk this Hawk won't hurt you you don't need one of those glove things I don't remember what they're called but um or maybe that's a falcon I don't I don't really know because it's not my gig but I can do this so we can do this it's simple and easy to do it is hopefully you've enjoyed this video if you've got any tips or tricks how repertoire because this a small job like this it's hard for a client to get a drywaller to come out and do just a small amount of of work like this and that makes a nice little niche for you or if you're doing patches things like that so as a painting contractor this is a good thing to have in your business wouldn't you agree it is and it um you can actually make really good money doing it too
