What happens here
Effective brine application depends critically on pavement temperature. While 23.3% brine is effective down to 15°F, simply increasing the salt concentration beyond this point would cause it to freeze. To combat colder temperatures (e.g., 4°F to -20°F), calcium chloride is added to the brine. A 20% calcium additive extends the effectiveness down to 4°F, and a 30% additive works down to -20°F. This custom blending ensures the brine remains active and prevents freezing, allowing for year-round effectiveness and optimal melting.
Goal: Adjust brine composition based on pavement temperature for maximum effectiveness.
Tools and materials
- Brine — Base solution for de-icing
- Calcium Chloride — Lowering the freezing point of brine in colder temperatures (below 15°F)
