Should we be using more screws? 🤔 #framing #carpentry #testing

What happens here

A deck screw is partially driven into a piece of wood. A specialized hydraulic jack, fitted with a metal bracket to grip the screw head and an attached pressure gauge, is positioned on top of the wood. The jack is then activated, gradually pulling the deck screw upwards while the pressure gauge displays the increasing force. The maximum pressure reached before the screw pulls out is observed.

Goal: Measure the pull-out strength of a deck screw.

Tools and materials

  • Hydraulic Jack with Pressure Gauge — Measuring the pull-out force of the fasteners
  • Metal Bracket — Securing the hydraulic jack to the fastener head
  • Piece of Wood — The base material into which the fasteners are driven
  • Deck Screw — The fastener being tested for pull-out strength
