(8,711 characters)today we're going to show you how to take this tool and make your lawnmower blade so sharp that you can shave with it hey there folks this is josh stoney ridge farmer welcome back to another beautiful tool tuesdays here on the stoney ridge farm tool tuesday is a day that i love it's a good time and it's a useful day here on the farm today's tool is called the work sharp knife and tool sharpener and this thing is an absolute beast so we have the old version this is the new version called the mark ii we're going to be sharpening up a bunch of knives and we're going to be able to shave with our lawnmower blades when we get done so come along let's have some fun i ain't afraid of work i ain't afraid to [Music] if you mess with my freedom i'll tell you just what you can kiss all right guys before we open up the work sharp knife and tool sharpener we are going to take a look at all the knives that we're going to be working with today so we've got several types of knives right here this is a called a pinning knife it's for pulling pin feathers out of a chicken we're getting ready to process our chicken this is a paring knife these are all dexter brand knives i really love these dexter knives this is a gerber little pocket knife a little clip-on pocket knife i really like that that's kind of my everyday carry knife along with this buck knife and you can see it is not very sharp okay we also have some knives i'm really proud of so this is a boy scout knife from either the 1950s or 1960s and i bought this at a second hand store so we're going to take that edge and really really make it beautiful that's a that's an awesome knife right there and this is a handmade knife that i got off of a good buddy of mine uh and a charity auction and this is a handmade knife with an osage orange handle and that is a bushcraft knife and this is the sharpest knife i believe i've ever had in my hand it is super duper sharp we're getting a little bit off on the edge i've been cutting hay bale strings with it for the cows so we're going to go ahead and sharpen that guy too so all these knives are going to get a good dose of sharpening so the next thing that we have are some fairly dull lawnmower blades and these came off of the ventrac tractor that's right behind me they're okay to cut right now but i like to keep a spare sharp set we've already sharpened the ones that are on the ventrac and we're going to go ahead and sharpen these guys you can see this blade actually has a little bit of rust on it rusty crusty we'll show you how we totally go through and refurbish these lawn mower blades and make them look bling bling with the work sharp tool sharpener simple enough this knife sharpener comes ready to rock and roll it already comes with the medium band and that's the medium band right there so you've got a fine which is 6000 grit you've got a medium grit which is 220 and then you've got a coarse grit which is 80. so we've got the medium grit on and that's what we want to start with and we're going to start with our dulles knife and before we even try to sharpen this knife we're going to beat it up a little bit so that makes for yeah she's dull she's really dull so on the top edge right here you have a setting for kitchen knives and pocket knives so 20 degree angle and 25 degree angle we're going to go ahead and set this for the pocket knife which is the 25 so not only do you have the two different angles of cut here and you can see there's little leather pad right in there we'll reinstall our belt it's just as simple you just press down install the belt give it a little trigger pull and it re-centers itself then you have a guide for your knife to ride upon here so you can flip this guide down like that and not use it or flip it up for sharpening knives and using it so the way this works is you've got a trigger right here you just pull that trigger so you want to start with your knife on here pull the trigger and let off when you get to the tip we're going to do two times on this side then we're going to go two times over here on this side [Applause] okay you can already see we're starting to get a blade and what we want to do is we want to push our finger over that blade and we want to feel like i can feel it right here you want to feel it catch your finger okay so when it catches your finger that's when you know you're about ready to switch over to the finer belt [Applause] all right oh that's nice you can feel that little edge on there she's perfect she's ready for the really fine belt so all i'm going to do is flip that down put my finger on here this is the 220 grit and we're going to put on the 6000 the honing grit okay again just take your finger push down it rides up on there once it's on there you just pull the trigger a little bit self-aligned it's pretty neat man this is a really cool tool okay so we're gonna go ahead and hone this we're gonna make this super duper sharp you guys could see how dull it was before so here we go we need to flip that up there we go [Music] okay that's it so the ultimate test will it cut paper yes look at that that's awesome this knife went from ultra dull to rock and roll let's go ahead and we're going to do the boy scout knife you guys don't need to watch me sharpen all these knives we're going to go ahead and switch out we'll pop this loose we'll switch this guy out and we're going to go back to our 220 grit our medium grit this is how quick and easy this is i gave my dad one of these and he is in love with it he doesn't have the mark ii version um but i might get him that too he loves it he's been using an old grinder to sharpen his butcher knives okay again we're going to draw this knife through we've got it on 25 degree look at this blade it's it's not sharp guys not sharp at all and you can't see hardly any reflection off this this thing will hopefully be cut and paper in just a minute we're going to go ahead and we're going to draw the knife through and again this has two speeds a slow speed and a high speed you can hear that we'll be using the high speed when we're taking a lot of material off of these lawn mower blades wow nice okay paper test here goes a paper test oh yeah baby this thing is super sharp here goes one more yeah it's sharp awesome now onward and upward we're gonna move on to our mower blades before it starts raining on us we're getting ready to get a rainstorm we've got our vise right here and the first thing we're going to do is clean up our blade a little bit so we're going to make a bit of a mess i'm going to take a sanding sponge and just kind of give the blade a good once over get all the rough stuff off of it so in order to sharpen this to make it razor sharp where we can shave with it doesn't have to be quite as sharp as the knives we're going to go ahead again we're going to flip our little tab down here we're going to change out and we're going to go straight to the coarse belt okay the course belt again is 80 grit so 80 grit and you can buy these belts replacement belts and the belts for your old work sharp tools will fit the new one so we'll center the belt just like so and we're going to remove this guard that we used before for sharpening the knives and it's just as simple as lifting that off okay now this has a little button you push it down and you can make an adjustment right here the belt turns this way and we're going to start working on this nice dull lawnmower blade okay so we're going to the honing belt this is what's going to get it razor sharp it's polishing [Music] that is the sharpest lawnmower blade you've ever seen guys be really careful if you're doing this because if you reach to grab this thing you can hurt yourself you can really cut yourself that thing is ultra ultra sharp okay let's give her the test will she shave that is so sad bye bye a lawnmower blade that you can shave with awesome guys well i hope you learned a
