What happens here
This video demonstrates the process of building effective sheet mulch layers in raised garden beds using various organic materials like existing soil, scrap wood, and nutrient-rich municipal compost to improve soil structure, fertility, and water retention. It also highlights the use of sawdust for weed control in surrounding pathways.

(8,287 characters)when's stoney ridge farm we're gonna plant his garden boom you got it today's the day and i'm soaking wet it is so hot outside it has been miserable today but i've been getting stuff done all day long so we could show you guys filling up our plant beds so these are raised beds we built two of these in the last video and now i have a total of five raised beds these are made out of white oak they're pretty awesome we'll talk to you a little bit more about those we're going to take little t the tym254 tractor and we're going to start filling these beds up on the back of the unicorn dodge is something super special that i want to share with you guys something that you may be able to get at your local municipality and we're going to have a little bit of fun planting most of the garden today all right [Music] all right i think it's most appropriate that we just do a bit of a walk about here and i do have this hat on not for the sake of well for the sake of my head will get sunburned but not for the sake of being goofy and having a goofy hat but this just helps keep the sun off my ears and my neck so there's a purpose this straw hat serves a purpose i'll post a link down the video description in case you guys want to get one for your friends or your neighbor or whoever that works outside but it's pretty cool i like to use it and i use one a year and throw it away so what we've got here is a raised bed this raised bed is made out of white oak and i've already filled this one up and you can see a little bit of root debris sticking up so what happened was last fall slash winter i had to scoop up all the soil out of my upper garden this is garden soil that i had been grooming for years up there but we decided that the shop is going to go up there so this is black gold pretty much that's why it's covered in ragweed right now then we also have two dump truck loads of sawdust and what we'll be doing with the sawdust you can see it on the ground all around us that's going to be weed control around our raised beds right here and these raised beds are two by twelves okay in case you're going to build it they're four feet wide by 12 feet long and they're two by twelves these are true two by twelves that we milled up on the sawmill hopefully you can see some footage of that so what we're gonna do big shout out first of all to northern tool for sponsoring the video man flex on professional water hose we're going to be running water hoses down here we're going to be doing this with soaker hoses so this bed's full and this bed's not full and these are the plants that we're going to be putting in the ground i've got some hot peppers some habanero peppers some bell peppers and i've got some tomatoes these are better boy tomatoes you can see various stages of progress all the scrap wood can go right into the raised bed and we're just going to dump these things completely full of soil with the little tym 254 tractor that thing is an absolute beast i just put the five foot tiller on it until the neighbor's garden boom it kicks butt it's got a little yanmar 25 horsepower diesel engine in it let's show you this black gold right here and talk to you about where you can get let me tell you something that you may or may not know about your local municipality if you live in a city or have a city nearby that gathers leaf debris and grass debris off the curb then you probably have access to this and you didn't even know it this is compost from our local compost center look at that that is black gold that is awesome awesome stuff that's going in the planter bed so what we're going to do is we're going to take this is way too much this is way way too much but it's 20 bucks a pickup truck load and or 20 bucks a ton so if you bring a pickup truck as much as you can fit in a pickup truck for 20 bucks man and look at this stuff it's absolutely awesome now you do have to be careful and it's a little bit what they call hot in other words it has high nitrogen content when we start scooping into this with the shovel you'll see steam rolling off of it especially if you get this in the early spring steam will be rolling off of it check your local municipality you may have access to the most awesome compost on earth guys post a comment down there if you do or if you've ever used this stuff you kind of got to be a little bit wary because some people may have used herbicides in their lawns so we got to think about that just a little bit however i've never had an issue with compost harming my garden vegetables it's only made them go boom with growth what we're going to do is we're going to put a layer about that deep probably about three to four inches deep in the top of each one of these beds for weed control and whenever weeds come up all i'm going to do is scoop out more compost and throw it right on top of the weed and it'll roast it so we got to get to work we got to put that dirt pile and these here raised beds and then we got to plant some gardens we're probably only going to plant this one pack of tomatoes today because it's evening time and i don't think i'll have time to fill up all these beds and plant the tomatoes but we'll show you guys how i plant the tomatoes cool let's get busy [Music] so [Music] [Applause] guys this is a really cool kind of hoe that i found i'll post a link down the video description it's super super handy i'm not sure exactly a.m leonard is the brand super awesome i think it's made in the usa too heavy duty [Music] [Applause] [Music] so guys this compost will sometimes be clumpy a little bit all you got to do is just kind of rub them together and those clumps just dissipate very very good stuff i have not sent this off for a soil sample yet but i have seen it make my garden turn into jurassic park man and it really really works great so without further ado let's go grab a rack of tomatoes and get them in this bed so these tomatoes are better boys i'm told that there is a difference between a better boy and a big boy a better boy is more disease resistant is what i'm told the way we're going to space these out is basically two feet apart so one two and then two feet down one two one two one two all the way down pretty much and all i do to plant them is i give a little squeeze right here a little tap right there and typically this root bound plant will come right out i'll just go in and it doesn't really matter if you plant below the stem of the tomato it's going to it's going to take root either way so i'll just tuck that in the ground there and then i'll water these good really really good i'll probably put the water on here about half the night right here you want about i guess four cups full about that big all the way around and i like to make a depression around the outside of my tomato plant so that the roots get wet all the way out to the outside we'll just go over and we'll plant all these real quick again if you plant a tomato plant squeeze squeeze squeeze pat pat out it comes you plant a tomato plant and you go too deep it's going to set roots out either way so it doesn't really matter so much give it all this plastic stuff shame on me for not planting my own seeds this year but i just didn't have [Music] time [Music] squeeze squeeze pat pat out it comes isn't that cool so guys that's it we got an awesome start to this year's garden got my hands in the soil it feels pretty good to be back in the in the dirt again working uh the little tym tractor the t254 did an awesome job if not for that tractor oh man this this would have been a heck of a job with a shovel that's for sure so little tea is awesome guys thanks a lot for joining me today tell me what you think about this tell me about your tomatoes tell me about your garden what do you think about raised gardens i've been thinking about doing these raised beds for about four years now finally had the lumber to do it so i'm going to pull the trigger now i don't have to bend over and weed this entire area and i can just plant the plants that i want and manage them really well that's why we went with raised beds this year awesome guys thanks a lot for joining me please pound that like button jump in subscribe the channel just getting it done today get in the garden planted see you next time
