What happens here

This project details the process of installing a backyard patio base, setting up cable railings, and laying pavers. The video emphasizes the precision required due to existing structures like a pool, retaining walls, and steps. It showcases the use of heavy machinery for gravel distribution, meticulous leveling techniques, and a specific method for laying paver base and the pavers themselves, including addressing a color change during the installation.

So, we're going to get our patio base in today. Possibly start laying pavers and uh we should have our cushions pretty much wrapped up. Catherine's working on the cushions. Supposed to be finishing those up today. So, let's give her a call. See how she's making out. >> Yellow. >> Hi. Is this Catherine's custom cushion cafe? >> Uh >> soup of the day. Always cushions. >> I don't I don't have any food to offer, but I do have cushion soup. You have cushion soup. All right. Excellent. Uh >> cushion fillet. >> Cushion fillet. Oh yeah, that's a good one. >> All right. >> Got a nice piece of cushion fillet. >> All right. Uh how we how we looking? How we looking? You're live. >> What do you mean I'm live? >> You're live. I'm recording this. I'm recording this for the vlog. This phone call. >> Yes. Yes. Yes. Well, at the moment I'm just working on some typical Monday morning things. I will head over to the actual cushion shop around 9:00 a.m. and then I will work on those cushions until I'm done. >> Sweeties for the day. >> All right. Uh we're just here. We got some stone getting uh getting moved around and uh possibly laying some pavers. >> Yeah. So uh we're moving right along. See you later. We got we got machines moving. I can't hear you. See you later. All right. Bye. cushions possibly here by the end of the day. Straight custom. It's going to be sick. Can't wait. Let's go. And it's going to start on railings. And what are we doing with uh it's going to be a little bit different here. >> Well, not necessarily. Just we're screwing in the concrete, not wood. >> Concrete and not wood. So, uh we'll show you what uh we'll use reason for that. Just concrete anchors and should be should be pretty simple. Um, we're going straight into our retaining wall. So, uh, show you what we got with that. [Music] In a lot of ways, this is a really easy uh, patio base installation because we have dictated heights almost everywhere here. We've got a surface we're coming up against with the pool uh, deck. We've got a surface we're coming up against with the wall stairs. So, it makes it really easy in the sense that we know where everything's got to be and we can base it off of what's already there. But, it makes it a little bit more not difficult, but more precise because we have to be dead on that. If we're just going straight out into a yard and we're going to bring the grass up to it, you know, if we're off by a little bit, you're not going to notice. you know, if if we have uh you know, 1/2 in too much drop in one spot, you're not going to notice that. But here, we're coming up against something that's not going to move everywhere around this whole patio. So, if we're not dead on, you're going to notice cuz this wall that's not going to sink. That's not going to move at all. If we have our pavers and we have a little bit of a valley against the edge here, you're going to see that. It's not going to look good and you're going to notice it. So, um, we're making sure that we're right on 3 in all the way across here. Then we'll lay our screed pipes for our 3/8 stone. And that we want 2 in below our top so that our pavers end up being about a/4 in high. And then we can compact them to their final resting place right here. So, Nick's just making some marks 3 in. So, we got some reference points and uh we'll be pretty good. Anything fun happened this weekend, Nick? I went to the Phillies game yesterday. >> Oh, you did? >> Yep. >> Good game. >> Yeah. Uh I went with my nephew who's two. >> Oh, nice. >> He wasn't impressed with pitching. >> Yeah. >> He wanted He was asking for home runs on the way over there. >> Oh, yeah. >> How many home runs you think they're going to hit? They're going to hit four out, breed one out, >> but he did get But Ranger as far as they get 11 strikeouts. >> Yeah. I've been getting Max into baseball, but uh he obviously also likes home runs, but he's hard to impress because I'm like, Schwarber's got a home run already. He thinks he's going to get another home run. He's like, I think he's going to get a million gazillion. I'm like, well, >> he's not going to have that many. Or I said, how many home runs do you think he has this season? He's got so many. And he said, probably like a million. Like, well, no, he's got like 45, but that's a lot. >> That is a lot. Not as much as the big dumper though. >> No, he's only got a couple more. >> 49. >> Yeah. My brother-in-law was like, "Hey, who's that guy?" I was like, "Oh, he's the big dumper." What the heck does that mean? >> He's carrying around a wagon behind us. >> He's he's the leader out in Seattle. He's not even in this. [Music] All right. So, we're getting our cable rail installed here. And this is pretty elementary, but we want uh all of these >> fans to be even. So, just walk us through that. There's a couple different ways to do it. >> So, what I do is I lay out my two ends. So, I have those dedicated and set. And then I know my base plate is 5 in. So, I make a mark where my plate needs to go. And then I measure plate to plate and I get that number. For instance, this number was 2 258 and 7/8 from plate to plate. But I know my plates are 5 in. So then I took that number and I subtracted 15 >> cuz we have three posts in the middle. because we have three plates. And then I divided that number by four because we're going to have four sections of railing. That comes up with 61 in plate to plate. Beautiful. So measuring off the inside mark both of those. Get your measurement and then pull off 61. It's your start. Measure over 5 in. Another 61. And uh they should all be even. Sweet. [Music] Heat. [Music] Heat. [Music] So, I've never actually done these uh this type of railing on a uh a retaining wall like this. done other ones where it's all going to be covered and uh we could actually use a bigger anchor, but I don't think we're going to have any issue. The one nice thing here is we're uh on top of a perfectly level surface. So, we can just install these. We don't have to mess around with um you know, tiny bit of shimming just because it's it's a little bit flatter than uh the surface of a deck board. surface of the deck board, you know, has just a little bit of uh kind of texture to it that that could throw you off a tiny bit. So, this is going to be a lot easier. Um, we're just going to drill them, set them, and uh we should be good to go. So, this was also a bit of an add-on. Um, you know, we we kind of kept playing around with this wall. They had a raised patio here before, but the wall was like all the way back here. And then they had some steps leading down here. But this was just kind of useless space. Like they're not going to put anything here. We just wanted to maintain access for this build door in the event they need to get some furniture down there or something. But otherwise, there was no real purpose for it. So we decided, let's push this wall back. And uh it led to no stairs being here. So a bit of a big drop. It's still within code where it's under 30 in. we wouldn't need a railing, but you're going to feel a little bit more uh safe putting furniture closer to it with this drop off. So, we decided let's throw a railing along this edge. And then back here, we're going to we're going to grade all this back in. So, over here, we're going to try to maintain this this step off at the corner as uh as low as possible. still going to be, you know, maybe eight eight inches or maybe a little bit more, but uh you know, we don't want to have this like twoft drop stepping down off of here. So, uh looking good. All right, looking good. 3/8 chipstone setting bed looking beautiful and nice and straight and flat and beautiful. So, we're going to start uh in this corner and we're going to do uh we're doing a double row of this which is the old Vienna Raven by Nicolock. Nice nice black paper. See that right there? That's the face mix. They call it a paper shield. Nice paper. So, we're doing double border of this and then we're going to get to these big boys. So, that's why we got that. [Music] [Applause] [Music] So, I measured out a couple things. We're going to have uh again the 24x36 slabs going all the way around here, kind of like a walkway. And I just don't want to be left with like a small sliver. So, figured it out. We're going to have them run this way 36 in wide to here, then it turns. But, uh we'll just have a small cut here as it turns. And if we run it 3T wide here, then turn it, we'll go all the way there, and we should have uh to cut off just a little bit off of this last slab. So, uh it'll look like full pieces. So, I think that's going to be the best way to go. And then when we get there, we'll turn again, go all the way to the pool, and we're going to have a ton of cuts over there. So, uh not going to matter as much, but we'll figure that out for kind of each run here and, uh make sure it looks nice. [Music] All right, we got our pavers here. We're using Nicolock. Uh again, bringing back the Alpine Contemporary 24x36 and we got a lot done yesterday. A lot of the uh initial prep. So, what we're going to do, got a little bit more of these 2x3 slabs. We're going to lay around this corner. It's going to go in front of the steps, and that way we have an inside corner to work off of. And that's where we'll start laying our Alpine Contemporary three-piece pattern. So, we're going to start in this corner. I was initially thinking of starting in that far corner, but that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I'm going to walk over the screed bed and work backwards. This way, we can have the pavers right here and uh just lay here and work that way. So, we'll get after it. Should be pretty good. This color is silver mist. Love it. Then we got the raven border. A pretty simple uh border detail here. Just a double raven border. We have a lot of other things going on. So, didn't want to get too crazy with the border detail because there's already a lot of details going into the patio. So, we'll uh start laying this and hopefully by the end of the day, we've got this area up to up to this post hopefully complete. So, let's go. [Music] Hey, [Music] hey, hey. Heat. Heat. [Music] I guess let's get this area to like right here totally finalized and right on the money. And then we'll bring in pavers right here just so we can lay these slabs up to this corner. We don't have to move them that far. And then we can do um the three piece all the way up to here. And then we'll we'll move back again. And then we'll kind of do the same thing. We'll do all this to here. And then we can just lay the papers there. for you. >> Nick, walk us through what uh what you were doing there with the laser. I like that move. >> Okay, so we had put a layer of stone down and compacted it. Then I came over here and I zeroed out the laser on this height of where we've been laying our uh crush stone on and our pipes on. So we know that that's a height that we like and we want. So then after we had it all compacted, which was going to push everything down, some parts were a little high, some parts were low before compacting. So all these dots are where I've stood with the stick to get a general idea of where it's lower by more than a layer of stone >> because it's within like an inch. We just need like a a light little layer on this. >> Yeah. So Jose will get in the machine and he'll he'll just sprinkle the bucket and then we should be good. >> Beautiful. But that's just so you get an idea and you're not throwing stone where you don't need it. >> Love it. All right, great work. So, we'll work up to this point. Keep working our way out. But, man, it's looking good. We got a lot of cuts done um yesterday. Look how beautiful these cuts came around the pool. We'll caulk these and uh they'll be perfect. Just kidding. Obviously, uh we're going to have a border there. So, we want to be within our cut. So, we are looking really good. And then we'll show you how we marked that out to get a nice smooth curve around the pool. One of the reasons I picked this color scheme, uh, number one, it's fairly neutral, so it's nothing too bold. We've already got a ton of details going on. We're going to have even more details over by the fire pit area. But, uh, this color is called oceanic blue, and I thought it was a nice gray tone with some blue, and it does a really nice job picking up the blue from the pool. They've got a uh a blue finish on the inside of their pool, so it really picks that up nicely, pairs with the water well, and it's also still in that gray palette. So, we've got grays and blues down here. And then going up here, we've got our browns and blacks, and just ties everything in nicely. I'm happy with how it's turning out so far. We're to some of the complicated uh parts now. Working around all of this. So, as we get close here, you see we've got cuts along this edge. So, uh we've laid as far as we can, and then they're measuring each one, cutting it as we go. We got the IQ saw going and the cut off saw because we're doing the same thing around here. Rough cutting these pretty close. But once we get all these in, we'll come around. We'll trace a nice perfect curve mimicking uh the edge of the pool deck. And that way we can get a nice smooth flowing curve and uh cut it all at once so it's nice and consistent. So we're making our way. So, we're working out this way and uh we're just going to keep working back towards the driveway and we've got a little bit of uh some more space here. The siding people are done. So, driveways cleared out a little bit. So, one of our next things is going to be getting rid of of all this extra dirt that we've got piled up. So, making good progress and uh approaching approaching the finish line. Heat. Heat. N. Heat. Heat. [Music] Heat. Heat. N. Wow. [Music] All right. You might be thinking, papa's going in the wrong direction. We're taking them up. That's exactly what we're doing. We got almost all of it laid, but uh you know what? Things happened. Client decided after sanding it down, they really didn't like the color. It was a little too blue and uh they wanted something more gray. So, we got a couple hundred square feet. All the oceanic blue is coming up and uh we're replacing it with Granite City. So, it's going to be more more monochromatic a little bit. It's going to match the mosaic here. That's Granite City. So, uh hey, is what it is. Want to make the clients happy. That's what we do here at Premiere. So, uh a little hiccup, little bit of a delay, but uh tried to jump on as quick as possible. We've got a dumpster here. Get rid of it. Um, all this stuff will be recycled. It goes and uh gets turned into recycled concrete. So, it's not going in the landfill or anything. But, uh, you might be wondering, why don't you save it? It's just a lot of work to try to repalitize this stuff, move it, save it for another job. So, and there's a lot of cuts already made. Unfortunately, it's going in the dumpster. It's getting recycled. and uh we'll relay something new. But we decided since you know what, we're going to be relaying something uh we're going to add in another cool detail. So, let's get this moved so we can get back to work. [Music]
