Painting Aluminum Windows & Doors. Spraying Metal Windows. HOW TO PAINT METAL

What happens here

After power washing, the next step is to sand the window frames. Use a 3M All-Purpose Multi-Use medium sanding sponge to abrade the surface of the teal green paint. This process scuffs the existing paint, creating a profile that allows the new primer to adhere effectively. Once sanding is complete, power wash the frames again to remove any sanding dust and ensure the surface is perfectly clean before priming.

Goal: Create an abrasive surface for primer adhesion and remove sanding dust

Tools and materials

  • Dust Mask — Protecting against inhalation of sanding dust
  • Power Washer — Final cleaning after sanding
  • Safety Glasses — Eye protection during sanding and power washing

Jake here is going to be power washing. The sanding is going to start off with a allpurpose 3M sanding sponge, a medium sanding sponge, and it's just a square sanding sponge. Makes sanding fast and easy on these windows. Here's a set of the windows, the green windows that we've actually gone and sanded. We first power washed them, got them really clean, and then we used medium 3M sanding sponges, and then once we've sanded them, we power washed them again with a power washer to get them really clean again. Now, we're going to start the masking process and priming process. We're going to be painting with DTM primer and priming with a DTM bonding primer.
