What happens here

This section showcases the machines used for preparing rough lumber. A Ridgid 6-inch jointer (on casters) and a Ridgid thickness planer (on a custom-built flip-top workbench) are positioned for efficient stock preparation. The flip-top design allows the planer to share space with a belt sander, providing two tools in one footprint—an excellent example of 'Space Utilization' and 'Eliminating Motion' (Muda). The jointer is noted for its basic functionality and includes blast gates for dust collection. The presenter reflects on the infrequent use of the belt sander, indicating a potential area for 'Sorting' (5S) if it doesn't add sufficient value to his current projects.

Goal: Dedicated machines for wood preparation – a Ridgid jointer, thickness planer, and belt sander – are organized on mobile bases or a custom flip-top bench to maximize space and allow for sequential processing of lumber, aligning with efficient flow and space utilization.

jointer here from ridgid it's a six inch jointer very basic jointer that anybody can get into at local you know home depot what not again has casters for the boards that will run completely across it won't interfere with my workbench there and at a right angle it won't interfere with this table here and i open the garage doors i have even more space but it's nice it's here it has its own blast gates that are set up that are running along the way with the two channels going into the dust collector and it works for the most part really well um i haven't found the need to change anything quite yet um i would eventually like to have a little bit of wider joiner just be able to run bigger boards and you know save money and not waste material but uh this is great so far i like it a lot and of course nothing pairs better with a jointer than a thickness planer this is a flip top tool bench that i've built oh maybe what three four years and uh it's solid i just i feel like if i was to redo it today i would try to make it a little bit more i don't know less play in it no wiggle room um and you know it flips over just like that and on the other side we have a belt sander it i don't know if i use this that often to be honest with you um i used to think this is something i needed but when i used to make cutting boards this was great now i can't tell you the last time i use this belt sander the thickness planer quite a bit but i don't know if i've used the uh the sander that often so that's one of the things you're like i wouldn't worry about it too much unless maybe your side business is making cutting boards and to which i say go get yourself one the band saw this was uh man this is an earlier stage as a tool that i thought i needed the most it's definitely a tool that when you need it it's fantastic but i'll be honest it doesn't get turned on that often uh oh you know the last time i turned it on was i needed to trim off some outlet cover
