What happens here

Based on your approved design, mark out the patio area using marking paint or stakes and string. Excavate the entire patio footprint to the required depth, typically 8-12 inches, accounting for the paver thickness, bedding sand, and base layers. Ensure proper drainage by grading the excavated area with a minimum slope of 1/4 inch per linear foot away from any structures (like the house shown in the video). Compact the subgrade thoroughly with a plate compactor to provide a stable foundation.

Goal: Excavate and properly grade the patio area to establish a stable and well-drained subgrade.

Tools and materials

  • Level — Checking the slope and grade of the subgrade
  • Measuring Tape — Measuring and marking the patio dimensions
  • Plate Compactor — Compacting the subgrade
  • Shovel — Manual excavation of the patio area
  • Stakes and String — Outlining the patio area
  • Marking Paint Rust-Oleum — Marking the patio perimeter for excavation
