What happens here
Lay down a geotextile fabric over the entire compacted subgrade. This fabric prevents the base material from mixing with the soil beneath and helps with drainage. Next, spread a layer of crushed gravel (typically 4-6 inches thick for residential patios) evenly over the geotextile fabric. Moisten the gravel and compact it thoroughly using the plate compactor. Repeat this process with additional layers of gravel until the desired base thickness is achieved and the surface is firm and level (with the appropriate slope).
Goal: Create a stable, well-drained, and compacted granular base for the pavers.
Tools and materials
- Level — Checking the grade and level of the compacted base
- Plate Compactor — Compacting the gravel base layers
- Rake — Spreading the gravel evenly
- Crushed Gravel — Creating the compacted base layer
- Geotextile Fabric — Separating soil from base material and aiding drainage
