What happens here
Once the sub-base and drainage are in place, apply the bedding layer. Spread a 1-inch thick layer of coarse sand (screeding sand) evenly over the compacted sub-base. Use screed rails (e.g., PVC pipes or metal conduits) and a straightedge to achieve a perfectly uniform and level sand bed. This step is critical for ensuring the pavers lay flat and maintain their stability. After screeding, carefully install paver edge restraints along the perimeter of the paved area. These restraints, typically made of plastic or metal, are secured with spikes and prevent the pavers from shifting or spreading over time, especially important for a herringbone pattern.
Goal: Create a smooth, level bedding surface and secure the paver perimeter.
Tools and materials
- Coarse Sand — Creating the bedding layer for pavers
- Paver Edge Restraints — Preventing pavers from shifting at the perimeter
- Rubber Mallet — Lightly tapping pavers into place
- Screed Rails — Guiding the straightedge to create a level sand bed
- Spikes — Securing the edge restraints into the base
- Straightedge — Leveling the bedding sand
