What happens here

After excavation, prepare the sub-base and install the drainage system. First, lay down a layer of geotextile fabric across the entire excavated area to prevent the base materials from mixing with the subgrade soil and to provide stabilization. Next, spread a uniform layer of compacted gravel (typically 4-6 inches thick) as the sub-base, compacting it thoroughly with a plate compactor. Then, install the central drain box in the predetermined location, ensuring it sits flush with the final paver height. Connect the drainage pipes to the drain box, running them through the prepared trenches with the necessary pitch. The video shows the drainage pipe collecting water from a downspout, so ensure this connection is made. The pipes should run underground and eventually daylight out into a lower area of the yard, directing water safely away from structures.

Goal: Create a stable foundation and implement the water management system.

Tools and materials

  • Central Drain Box — Collecting surface water from the paver area
  • Compacted Gravel — Creating the sub-base for the pavers
  • Downspout Adapter — Connecting a downspout to the drainage pipe
  • Drainage Pipes — Transporting collected water away from the area
  • Geotextile Fabric — Separating subgrade from base materials and providing stability
  • Plate Compactor — Compacting the gravel sub-base
  • Rake — Leveling gravel
  • Shovel — Spreading gravel and backfilling trenches
  • String Line and Line Level — Establishing and checking proper pitch for drainage
