What happens here
This project details the process of improving water drainage around a residential building complex by regrading the backyard, installing new drainage systems, and implementing erosion control measures. The goal is to prevent water pooling near foundations, mitigate basement flooding, and redirect water away from the buildings through a strategically designed swale and rock barriers.

(8,309 characters)so in the last video in this series we got all the demolition and the excavation removals completed but now we've got to move on to Phase two which is beginning the restoration project there's a lot of work that has to be done in this so I'm gonna turn it over to Sam to walk you through what has to be done all right we we got a couple of different things we're gonna be doing today one of the things is we're gonna be fixing the grade on this hill cuz like I said earlier it's pumped over and all the water's just running from the back from the back round down the side here so what we're gonna do is bring the grade up and then it's gonna be rock from the side of the house about three feet out we're gonna run the edging down and then poly and rock so that should fix the water problems along this hill inside of this house here and then second thing we're gonna start working on the grade along the back here so we got scrape all this side off scrape it down out here and bring it all up along the back here to make a swale so we got the water going down here out and around the hill towards the street where it's supposed to be I'm about there here all the way down it's gonna bring the grade up probably about a good six inches that tapering down out that way towards the Swale that we are gonna make so you're gonna have a gonna have a pretty busy day [Applause] [Music] you come out of break lanai chime so free to correct the grades means we've got to do a lot of excavation because we can't just skim down to where we want the elevation set we've got to actually dig deep enough that we can then re-import organic material and then also take into consideration the actual height of the sod itself the side typically will come with its own padding of black dirt as well and so all of that has to get added into the measurements for the removal prior to the restoration beginning so a lot of dirt basically comes out and we can bring water back in but not quite as much dirt is the easy way of saying [Music] all right so we were saying yesterday that this guy here has got the wrong you know drain box set up for this whole thing that worked for him cuz with the shape of this one the waters just running off here it's not covering the whole back so anything that's coming down here is obviously just running off the side so we got a little bit of rain this morning and you can see here I was all all wet stuff so when that when the patio is here all of that water that this was missing was running off the front in the back and going I don't know the slab and back towards the house with the grading started we've got to protect against the erosion control this has been the wettest year in Minnesota history and we've been getting rain every few days so that means we've got to put something down to protect all that raw dirt from going into the storm water system do you guys use silt fence because on this jobsite we're actually using we call them bio rolls or bio logs and it actually works really effectively almost as good as silt fence and I was actually surprised by how well this worked cuz we got poured on after we put these in place and it worked out pretty well [Music] alright so the back of where we're working here they had Comcast cable running all the way down and around the around the side down the hill over there and then you know Comcast the their cables aren't very deep usually just right under the grass so we had to pull that up move it out of the side because we're gonna be scraping all this up and you know you don't want to snag it because people get angry when they don't have their internet with the water funneling right down the edge of the foundation we've got to do something to protect that area so we're actually going to remove it and install landscaping fabric and alter the grades in this entire slope now some of the footage you guys got lost yes it happens so where I wanted to show you how we regraded this whole area all of that got lost the sodding footage got lost I'm so sorry it is what it is I wanted to show you exactly how we cut in all those swells but you just gonna you're gonna have to trust me on that because I don't have it we had it but my computer lost it so this is the best I got to show you at this point and then I'm gonna do an end of the I'm gonna go walk the site to show you how everything turned out at the very end so we're gonna get to that in a minute so we're gonna set the elevation along the foundation so we have clearance beneath the sill plate but right where the skid steer is sitting all of that is going to come down and after we get the rocks in place that way we have a very clear measurement of how much grade that we have running away from the foundation this is kind of a critical element to the success of this entire project and you'll see exactly what this looks like at the end of this video when we do the walkthrough and shot now you're gonna notice that we're using a non permeable poly beneath the rock but this stuff is slicker than snot on the door handle and so to keep that rock from sliding down we're using a 3/4 to one inch size rock that angular in nature and locks in place an important element all right guys well we're back at the site we're gonna show you how we wrap this project up even though we lost the footage we still can it show you what we did so this is all fresh sod right through here and you can see where we've cut in the Swale and then we blended it with the existing grades around the corner now let's go up and take a look at the backyards all right guys let's take a closer look at what we had to do you're actually gonna see that we sod it all the way up the hill and that was to blend all of the contours down because we had to actually extend our grading even further than what we originally anticipated so when we look at this backyard you originally we had the grade set there but then to blend everything we ended up recutting it higher up the hill so that we could get a nice even contour without getting any I call them ankle twisters steep drop-offs or ridges or things that if you weren't looking you would hit your ankle on and twist it another thing that we had to do the footage we lost was we had to raise these air conditioning units up they were actually sinking down because these downspouts were dumping water right here and everything was settling and actually kicking towards the buildings so before where this grade was flat now you can see that we've got everything going all the way as far out as we possibly can and that's about 16 to 20 feet where we have the Swale kicked in now this Swale it's set to go two different ways instead of having it just flow down one side or the other side we split it in the middle so now half the water who's going to be going that way and the other half of the water is gonna be going behind me and this is gonna kick all this water out and away from the buildings now before we were able to get this project desaad put in place we actually had two solid weeks of rain and during that two solid weeks worth of rain for these basements where before we're getting flooded off from just a single day of rain they didn't get a single drop of water in any of their foundation so we know that just by grading alone without French drain without doing full-fledged foundation waterproofing we were able to solve this problem that was those two weeks of rain were actually we're gonna count it as a blessing because we were able to actually test everything we did before we laid the sod out so sometimes you just got to look at the the good things that you have in life and that delayed us by two weeks but it also tested out what we were doing so would that be inside you guys that's all we've got for today I hope this video series helped you out let me know what you thought of it in the comments down below some of you guys are asking for more job site videos I'm gonna keep doing them and if you want more like this just say give me more jobsite videos and I'll just keep it up for you guys that's it that's all I got but check out the video I'm going to post here I'm gonna post one over here and god bless you guys go get them and whatever you do I hope you just have an amazing day see you on the next one you guys
