What happens here

This project documents a comprehensive effort to address severe water intrusion and foundation damage around a residential property, particularly beneath a recently constructed four-season porch. Initially planned as a simple regrading job, the project escalated significantly when excavation revealed extensive cracking in the concrete block foundation wall and persistent groundwater bubbling up from underneath. The video details the excavation process, the discovery of the underlying issues, discussions about potential causes (such as a natural spring or improper backfilling), and the implementation of a drainage system involving perforated pipe and grading. While the contractor recommended a more thorough structural repair, the homeowners opted for a 'patch and waterproof' solution. The project also included rebuilding a problematic boulder wall to improve surface water diversion.

[Music] [Applause] [Music] but what's the fix what did you say what the fix was or just that they were like oh my gosh up although shut up the guy that he talked to was saying that sounds fishy to me [Music] oh that's what I call Berrien and mistake it started out as a really straightforward regrading job they were getting water in their basement right in this area and while we were going to do is remove the landscaping and then transition the grades so that we kicked the water instead of concentrating on the house to be away from the house but once we started to remove the landscaping what we discovered next everything changed and of course this happens to be another one of those projects where one false move and leap damn exciting and then could eventually end up replacing the siding on the whole house in the last video I did some similar to those people who are like well why would give to replace all of the siding on the house well the thing is if you damaged any of that siding and you can't color match it perfectly then a potential customer can have their tire house recited it's just the law at least in our neck of the woods I don't know what it's like where you are but that's the way it operates for us so on every job there's always a challenge and in this case one of the little challenges that we came up was that the stones were hyper saturated there was a lot more water that we're starting to pump up from under the ground and go into our work zone and it wasn't necessarily coming from the top it was actually coming and bubbling up from underneath and you're gonna see just how bad that is and just a minute [Music] so it's not just the fact that he's digging in super muddy conditions right next to the house it's right underneath a four-season porch almost like the job we did one project before this one but this foundation this four season porch was just installed less than a year ago so we can't afford to even come close to it we're hunting for the footings of the house and it's just filling up with water [Music] [Applause] [Music] so right here you can see where we're starting to discover that there's more to this story than what we initially gambled for the foundation wall is cracked in various places throughout here but this is guys just the beginning of this problems on this project water coming in from here back here so as we're excavating this out we're finding more and more foundation damage plus we're also finding that the houses actually got water that's pouring out from underneath it so we've got to find out just how far this damage goes and that means we've got to expose a lot more of the foundation I called out the homeowners and they weren't too happy with what we were discovered right now this is a very correctable situation the last time we ran into this what we ended up doing was jacking up the house removing that foundation wall and then just rebuilding a foundation wall underneath it and then setting the house back down it sounds a lot more complicated than it really is but to the average homeowner that sounds pretty scary so they called in another contractor and got their opinion got his opinion on it and what he wanted to do and what I wanted to do are not even close to being the same beater dry as a bone I get my guys new boots every season and ask him to put them to the test and these were Philadelphia's by Keene and he must really like them but now they take a look at this wet mud coming out this is the kind of stuff that we are working with and you're gonna see just how extensive this damage is just a minute you can see here especially in through this area and up through here hearts been pushed in and the foundation guys that the homeowners were talking to said more than likely what happened is when they were back filling all this when they were building the house they packed too much up along here and that's what caused this to start getting pushed in and you can see here it's uh it's pretty bad so they're also saying that more than likely what's going on is the count is the water is just sitting in all of these blocks and then draining out in some areas with with the cracks and whatnot so now this is a couple days after we've excavated and if you look right there you can still see water coming through that foundation wall that's one of two things that's perched water which means it's trapped and then it's just migrating out from underneath the foundation wall or more likely the house was actually built on top of a spring and that water's going to continue to pour forth that tells me that none of this really looks like an issue from backfilling I don't see individual blocks broken I don't see them cracked where if during the backfilling process they shoved a big rock against it or something like that cracked the foundation what I see is a completely different problem occurring but the guy that does and is ending up going to do the repair doesn't see the same problem I see all right so we're moving on in the next stage of the project here gonna be a couple of days before this foundation gets sorted out so what we're working on a day is this boulder wall here we're adding another course to get it up to get it up to about here cuz right now this slope all the water running from that gutter and up there is coming right down here and washing out behind this wall and for some reason they built it swinging in so we are gonna swing it out this way towards arch here to get all the water running down getting it out this way part of the original scope of work and our project was to change the grades to pitch the water away from the house foundation and that meant removing some trees and bushes a lot of times those get planted without any regards so how they're going to affect the grain around them and unfortunately it means that sometimes they've just got to come out to do the job the right way okay so have you guys heard what they want to do on this look at those two gaps down there okay you should come today and then the foundation guy can't get out here until Monday so this is supposed to rain on Monday - yeah well it's gonna pour Sunday and Monday so awesome and then they're coming - these guys are dumb fixing the foundation so what's the fix I would do you say what the fix was are just that they were a friend of course on it or did he tell you what they were doing a fix it er um I guess they're just gonna patch up all the cracks shut up that was pushed in when the house was built when they're back going she was saying the guy that he talked to was saying they they packed too much I don't know that sounds fishy to me yeah but ya know I do remember saying the guy he talked to this is gonna come in and everything that should be good oh that's what I call burying a mistake this I mean it was it was no matter what even if it was broke years ago you know that you've got a problem now you correct it you don't just go well [Music] did this place like on the end of it oh yeah you can kind of see it through the window thing is huge I don't see I would put two extra supports underneath there yeah I would put one boom boom with a header in between it just to support is it me or is it visually look like the center of that is doing this does it okay so Sam sees it do you see it Blaine yeah but okay you talked about passing code that doesn't mean it's right let's get this straight because code like a decade ago was stuck no stuck all like there was there was a stucco code do you guys know what I'm talking about where the stucco had to be sealed or whatever and every house that they built to code started to rot yep yep so as far as I'm concerned built the the code that doesn't make it right there's so many things wrong but we can't force them to do the fix the way we'd want it done so well we did the best we could we talked to the customer told them what I mean all three of us were there told them what we thought would be the right way to fix it and instead they're just gonna they're not even car filling it they're not gonna and waterproof it but here's the thing they're waterproofing it but when you dug it out the water was coming from underneath the foundation it wasn't coming okay that could be that that one could be but I'm imagining that we're just waterproofing this little area here the waters didn't get into the block there probably migrated in and it's probably migrating in from the entire area so now what we're doing is we're trapping the water beneath the house at least before we had a path out all right all right not the way I would do it not the way I would do any of this but that could be it that could be like an abscess up optical illusion I was gonna that's the color illusion you can't tell I'm polish it's an obstacle holy crap you see what I mean I'm pretty sure that's read about their fireplaces right there four fireplaces through here right there yeah but it could still be an optical illusion so anyway you know you instead of seen it you could just put a level on it yeah it does just seems like it's exaggerated on this side so that it was [Music] alright you guys now it's your turn I need to hear from you do you agree with me that a more thorough repair job should be done in the corner of this foundation or do you think patching it and waterproofing will suffice on this job I'd love to get your guys's opinions because I mean heck there's more than one way to do a job and I don't know if I'm right so you guys tell me what you think in the comments down below and on the next video we're gonna show you exactly what the contractor did to repair this so without wasting any more time while we are wasting time can you get away till tomorrow that's all I got for today you guys god bless and go get them [Music]
