What happens here

This project details the extensive preparatory work involved in reassembling a highly customized LSX engine for a Cadillac Escalade. The process includes thoroughly cleaning the engine bay, disassembling and customizing the intake manifold (including drilling and tapping new ports), professional testing of fuel injectors, and installing critical components like the flexplate and motor mounts onto the engine block. The video emphasizes the custom nature of the build, where almost every component requires modification or careful fitting.

this video is brought to you by bespoke post it's time to officially start the escalade reassembly first order of business you would think would be to put the engine inside here but it's actually not we're gonna finish cleaning up the rest of this it's very dusty and yucky from being oily when it was last running and dusty from sitting for a year there's that and also preparing the new intake manifold to go in place of the old one this is kind of a really custom everything in here is custom as this gets put back together you should know what all the components are that go back into it we're gonna explain what they are we're gonna explain why they are how they are the whole purpose of this re this rebuilding here is to answer all those questions forever everything in here is very custom and we're gonna have to get the new hi-ram base ready to work where this old one did because there's we're gonna have to drill out and tap a couple ports back here and another one right here in the crotch right on the bottom the little wheel goes to the distribution block under the hood for vacuum reference for everything yeah yep and there wasn't enough room to like you know you don't want that crap off the charge pipe or anything so i put it under here obviously you can't reach this when the intake is on but the whole purpose is you put it on there and you tighten this down and then when you bolt the intake on then you just leave this hanging on the back and you connect it where it goes we have to move this fitting over to the new one and we have to pull the injectors out of this one so we can go take them to get tested and cleaned if they need to be cleaned so let's start with that and we're going to take this lid off because we're using the lid just not the base because this is an ls3 base and the new top end is ls7 based uh it's so pretty yeah it's black left over from the storage closet at lme it's port matched to i think mast heads they said but it's gonna be better than this the stock non-boarded base that we had on there anyway and we also got to drill holes for this custom throttle bracket onto this one pretty much everything on this build has been modified in some way to be suitable for the escalade yeah it's not like you like oh you can just throw a new base on there i mean you can but you got to do a bunch of stuff to it to make it work so that is the cool part of a custom build is everything is custom and it's painted about to work on sometimes do you want to learn how to take the injectors out yeah okay let's do that first so we took the two bolts off the rails these are holley rails they came with the intake and just flipped them around so the holley was on the inside before because there's a funny story about that but they're going to be on the outside now um yeah you want to see if that'll come off yes wiggle it oh no the spacer because there's nothing holding them on anymore where to go we need that that's critical oh it's under the escalade it's by the exhaust oh i just wanted to go home it's okay you go home soon there's another one gonna fall off no there's only two okay just making sure yeah what these do is hold the fuel rail the right distance away from this to be on top of that because if you don't have a good o-ring seal there we go fuel will spray out and catch on fire yes that is it never been taken off the intake from the first assembly you can see how grody it is in there these things really don't want to come out i had never had to deal with this before i feel like britain and stepbrothers it's like yelling dale into the drums and then like maybe i'll come out it'll be better we'll at least feel better for saying it what is the objector's name what should we all edit dale all right well not like you know what i mean it's dale yeah you dale oh god no it's like doesn't work people we talked to up here i are gonna watch this and be like these people are i think we should put some oil down on there to hopefully get those to come out because they should just pop out they're just dry i want to take a second here to tell you about our friends at bespoke post this boat post is a monthly membership club delivering awesome boxes of top shelf goods from under the radar brands it's free to join every month they introduce their members to cool new products every box has around 70 in value but only costs 45. and 90 of the products from bespoke post come from small businesses around the united states and crafted in austin texas small business supporting 101 right here we get a box assigned to you each month based on a quiz you take when signing up and before the ship you have a preview of what's inside you can keep it swap it for a different box or skip the month completely we're gonna take the quiz right now and show you how it works sure i'm open to try um yes logan likes home decor um open to try this not really that fancy but i'll try it i pretty much only wear my own shirt so i'm not really interested in that i do not smoke or use tobacco kitchen and cooking very interested we need more of that stuff i'm interested in this because i'm disgusting not really camping in outdoors yes i have an rv i'm very interested travel bags do a lot of travel and i'm very interested oh man very interested and then you type in your email and get going now we're going to use the slash knife to open up the other box here just because it's very sharp a headlamp i picked this out because i actually need one of these to get 20 off your first box check the link in the description and use code stapleton20 at checkout another tech tip uh there's going to be a lot of that during this reassembly process so just kind of explaining little tips and tricks that you can use when you're putting something together i sat and clear coated this intake manifold base so it wouldn't stain like you you know you get a brand new cast aluminum part like this you get grease or something on it you can't get it out for the life of you but it's brand new before you ever mess it up take it right out of the box and clear coat that thing with satin it'll look still like it's you know out of the box you can use gloss if you want to but all this oil on here should just it should come off with soap and water as opposed to being impregnated in the casting impregnated yeah you can do that with alternators um water pumps especially for you people in the north where you get corrosion and this stuff looks like it has barnacles all over it after it goes in the salt that's that's why i figured out how to do this because i hate getting barnacles and all my stuff would've just started yanking on this thing and not realized i was there and broke it off i didn't notice it was still there that's happened before you ever noticed one of those transmissions over there one of the top bell housing bolt holes is gone yeah that's why we didn't know there was we didn't know there was one up there and we yanked the engine out when was this oh years ago that's when that's like when the blower went on oh okay yeah when the escalade was still normal we didn't know there was a bolt up there and it got popped right off blah ew this is the first time this has been open since it all went together it's interesting you can you can see how all the crud goes to the back of the intake that's why the back cylinders are always the leanest because the air you know it goes like that it doesn't just move well there's holes here we're gonna go here it's gonna hit the back first and then go in with this o-ring they have you cut it and then put um rtv where the where it meets getting these things out is the worst so we put some oil on there to help we're going to drill out the old this is set up for a gm intake temp sensor and we're going to drill it out to tap it i don't know how i should that the good angle do this is maybe like put on the ground and hold it with my legs don't have a vice big enough to really hold this thing so that's what we're gonna do i don't remember how i did this the first time it was so long ago there it is [Music] yeah you know what don't have the little t handle thingy so we're just going to use a ratchet and it'll work fine we're not like billionaire gazillionaire people have every single tool do everything the right way all the time but we make it work so there you have it three hours later so when you're tapping stuff in pipe thread you don't want to go the whole way down because then it doesn't have any taperiness left to be tight on like uh if you go the whole way down i mean this is a little bit different because it's really thick but if you're doing tape doing something thinner like i don't know like a charge pipe or something if you go too far down your sensor will not have any taperedness to grab onto and it will never be tight you'll have to um use a bunch of sealant or goo or it'll just never be tight because you can tell that the end of this is a lot narrower than that so we had to run this tap almost the whole way down into here to get it to where this iat sensor will thread in enough to not you know have like four threads engage and stick out the whole way so we'll show you that's about where you want it because we'll do you know a little bit more and it'll be tight and then it won't stick out four feet so um you kinda just gotta play with it it's a lot it's a lot more specific if you're tapping something thin but in this giant block like this um you know it's gonna get tight no matter what you do did you learn something yeah cool did you learn something leave a comment so that's done now we have to do the crotch hole i love step bits if you don't have one of these get some just trying to see if maybe there was a better place to put this hole like you know back here or somewhere but then i was thinking about it and who cares man it worked just fine for years right there it's gonna work fine right there again i'm trying to reinvent the wheel here there must have been a reason i put it there the first time so just gonna know go with what works this shirt looks so cool it does this is this teal is way more accurate than the original ls escalade shirts you probably can't tell on camera but yeah you can't tell on camera but it's like way better it's a little too dark but it's like still closer yeah and my own flub during the revisions of this artwork i didn't even notice that this was teal i forgot until i was looking at just now thinking something looks off and then i remembered the b post is black so here we have a suburban with an escalade front clip on it sad story okay back to work also we don't have very many of these so if you want one you you better go check like literally we did the pre-order and it was like only a little bit more than that yeah like pre-order plus like maybe like two yeah five for a few of sizes but that's it and they'll run up to 5x we carry everything to 6x typically don't you hate when drills do that they cut their way through and then they just go and they don't actually finish out the hole you can see there's like two little prongs in there logan's gonna work on cleaning up some of the engine bay area before we set it in there because it's yucky and i'm going to drill and tap the intake manifold for the throttle bracket we got the injectors um tested so we will show you that clip right now it's pretty interesting that's the true test of if there if there's any dirt in there because they're not well it i like catching work all over the place some people will just do it wide open and i don't think you get a accurate reading [Music] how far would it be off before you'd be like oh we got to do something about these uh if it's all you know like two two or three like i mean that's a lot of fuel you know if you look at the mount in that barrette so um if it's uh if it's all over the place we'll ultra sonic them you know blow them out or something reflow them and get them get them close but that's that's pretty good well that's good to know yeah i'm glad to check because i wouldn't want to put them all back together and have it melt something because yeah we'll mark the couple bigger ones and put those in the very back now we found out our injectors are all good and we marked the one that was kind of done a little higher than all the other ones and we're gonna put that in the back of the intake because that's always the leaner part not that it really matters just something we can do because we can yeah we'll put those in last before once all the drilling and tapping cleaning is done with this and then we'll get to putting the motor mounts on here ac stuff picking it up and we're gonna get this thing set in uh by tonight that's the plan here so let's get going oh it's made an interesting discovery here i don't know if this is like a newer version of this or something but the holes in the base are threaded instead of the top so you put them in the bolts going from the top not the bottom like like this one is and these are hogged out in here which is not like that there not as much kind of interference with my hole is going to go that's a little different um get some new bolts for this then if they're going to be on top but i just figured that out when trying to get this mocked up on here so i can make sure that the the throttle cable bracket is going to go in the you know the correct spot so i don't actually do it wrong this is pretty much the reality of what we were doing and what this is gonna be just doing stuff running around looking for tools you can't find kind of getting situated starting to figure out everything is um it's a process we're getting there now my plan here is i'll just do the first one and that way i know the other holes get drilled in the exact right place because these holes are a little bit bigger than what the actual bolt needs to be because uh it's hard to make it perfect when you do everything by hand so if i put one in here and screw it in it's all good then i do this one screw it in it's all good i'm literally gonna drill i'm gonna drill the holes or at least mark the start while this is on there that way you know it's in the right place i'm not just gonna you know rookie mistake make three dots drill three holes put it on there none of them are in the right place and you gotta wallow out your holes be way too big to fit or make a completely new bracket just to fit the holes you just made been there done that many times so get one we'll get one going and then you know do the rest of them that's my my tech tip to you so the intake is all finished up pretty much for the most part it's not tight because i still have to put this on with thread sealer and kind of you know like line it up perfectly once it's like in with the cable and all that stuff so we're going to shelve that for now and get to cleaning off the components that bolt through the engine before it gets set in there the ac compressor brackets the factory bracket using this dart block but i had to modify it a little bit to get it to fit you can see i had to shave this down it's a flat disc i just use the flap just to grind this down here some in here some in here to get it to clear some of the castings on the dart block but other than that bolts up perfectly fine and it uses atomic fab solid motor mounts which are fine they don't vibrate or anything like that but he's got poly ones if you don't want solid ones these ones have been great i did have to do some clearancing on here a little bit just i wanted to fit perfectly in the frame cradle so did that that's it though they bolt right on got them cleaned up so now we get to dig through the miscellaneous bolts in the bag and figure out what goes where i'm gonna get as much as we can on here before the engine is dangling because it's hard to bolt stuff when it's you know swinging around with this bonnet friction billet sfi flex plate real tank we're gonna bolt it on there with some arp flex plate bolts some of your rio g's might remember uh hatchet man from race week gave us hatchet in the parking lot and kearney well he gave us some cool old tools too like these wrenches that were curved that's how i don't know i'm sure they'll be used for one of those eventually just found one so benny we're using your wrench to uh tighten the flex plate here because the the curve happens to be perfect to you know you can see a bolt through there and then the other side is holding on the transmission dowel so when you turn it doesn't doesn't turn so there you go how's it working in here it sucks i know it does i'm very proud of you this is like a year old gum that you left here it's year old gunk on top of years old gunk because the this thing made oil goo from day one i could never figure out why still really don't yeah kind of fixed a lot of that part of the reason is the valve covers used to just dump breathers just don't blow at the inner fender which wasn't good but we fixed that now it has actual catch cans that are down here on both sides made those but uh the valve covers are leaking or one of them was so it was the oil was going into the valley and then running down and everywhere yeah yeah it sucked this side is completely disgusting it must have been the side where it ended up trickling down to definitely i mean it was even in the like the intercooler in here yeah i don't know sitting inside they're like pulled up i don't know how it got there that's the thing because i thought i suspected for all the power steering was leaking too but i added more fluid to it and i never saw it like leak anymore so i i don't know if it does leak we'll figure that out now that we know the valve cover is handled if it's leaking somewhere else we can narrow that down too i think there may have been multiple sources at one time another tech tip here on these this era of gm truck you can just unbolt the hood hinge spring thing here take the bolt from it and there's a perfect little groove right in the back of the latch where you can stand the hood straight up put the bolt in there and hold it up for you so you don't actually have to unbolt the do stuff super convenient i'm gonna finish getting this torqued up and uh wheel the cherry picker over here and pick this thing up we don't need to film this but it's just the little things that just scrunch your gears i don't think your hands turn why is my wrist not smaller but we kind of got everything out of the way ish looks like freaking crap in here and i hate it but there's not a lot we can do about that if you go on the ls exclade playlist you can see every video being worked on this and it was never cleaner than it was first time it fired up after that it's just been impossible to keep up with it's a street car gets driven seen a lot of miles that's just how it is that and it got daily dripping for three years in pennsylvania winter and all that so a lot of things are crusty and there's nothing we can do about it it had 60 000 miles on it the original plan was to get the engine set in there by the end of this video but the more we dug into it the more we realized it just didn't sit right with either one of us to stick it in there with all that dirt still in there we got to clean it it's going to take some time to clean it and do it right but it's gonna be worth it problem is we haven't posted in a week because of the pri show yeah we were gone for the second half of last week at the pri show in indy which is a if you don't know is a trade show or all the you know companies and people and everybody in this industry kind of gets in one place and you can do a lot of uh networking important planning for next year which we did we got a lot of really cool stuff in the works but that's why we're behind we wanted to preface that so you just didn't think we were out screwing around this is been one heck of a time trying to get everything caught up with the orders and just getting the work done to…
