LSXcalade Returns: Late Model Engines Tears Down The 427 & Explains EVERYTHING (LSX Engine Tech!)

What happens here

After all internal components are removed and inspected, the engine block is ready for further machining and cleaning. The block will undergo a full 'blueprinting' process, which includes meticulous cleaning in a jet wash to remove all debris. Then, it will be prepared for precision machining: line honing the main bearing bores, decking the block surface for optimal head gasket sealing and compression, drilling and tapping for half-inch head studs for increased clamping force, and cylinder honing to achieve the ideal surface finish for piston rings. This ensures the block is perfectly true, strong, and ready for high-performance assembly.

Goal: Determine the necessary machining and preparation for the engine block rebuild.

Tools and materials

  • CNC Machine — Precision decking of the block surface
  • Cylinder Honing Machine — Achieving the optimal cylinder wall surface finish
  • Dial Bore Gauge — Measuring bore dimensions
  • Drill Press — Drilling and tapping for half-inch head studs
  • Engine Block — The main component undergoing rebuild preparation
  • Half-inch Head Studs — Replacing standard head bolts for increased clamping force
  • Jet Wash Machine — Thoroughly cleaning the engine block
  • Line Honing Machine — Ensuring perfect alignment and roundness of main bearing bores
  • Profilometer — Measuring surface finish (e.g., RA value)

yeah yeah now now everything's out of stock because everything's out of stock everywhere and it's exactly that just means that so we're back on the real quick we're gonna do the half inch studs yeah so we'll put it up in the machine we'll we'll uh drill and tap it for the half inch studs we're gonna so basically it's gonna go through our blueprinting process we'll line home the block get that lined out um it'll go into our cnc machine and uh we'll deck the block at that time we'll also do the half inch studs it'll then go into the cylinder hone we'll we're not going to take much material we're going to really take the minimal amount of material to maintain the most the least amount of piston wall clearance because we're already the pistons looked good so it was they weren't showing signs of inadequate piston wall clearance so we don't want to go you know too far to the other side uh like i explained earlier so we're going to take out the minimal amount of material uh but we're you know it's a balance but you want to have sometimes you'll sacrifice sizing for geometry so we would rather take out let's say another half thousands to get the cylinders nice and round and straight and the right cylinder surface finish than to leave them the geometry [Music] not as good but keeping the size a half thousand smaller if you if you make sense so geometry is more important important than sizing in this case here we want to optimize ring seal yeah other than that i mean it'll go through our whole deal we'll just check the you know we'll verify the balance of the crankshaft just to say we did um obviously it looks like it's in good spec but uh just part of our process i think we're also going to do the uh we're going to receive the receiver group the block and then also put in the hoops into the cylinder head oh so we're doing that too we're going
