What happens here

After confirming the wiring issue, the owner meticulously pulls back the entire wiring loom from the engine bay. Upon close inspection of the transmission connector, he discovers a damaged high-speed CAN bus wire that was sliced and had several broken strands. He proceeds to repair this broken piece of wire.

Goal: Locate and fix the faulty wiring causing the communication error

Tools and materials

  • Butt connectors — To rejoin the cut wire ends
  • Electrical tape — For insulating the repaired wire
  • Wire cutters — For trimming the damaged wire segment
  • Wire strippers — For preparing wires for connection
  • Wiring loom — The main electrical harness containing the transmission wires

anything it's got to be in the wiring i pull it up through here if i take out the other o2 sensor connector plug we can take the whole thing and flop it up up in here and have all kinds of room to work with this is a factory harness that's been thinned out to be standalone so in a factory 2009 truck like this came from the transmission can bus wires did not go right to the computer they went to the body control module and all this other stuff for the you know the speedometer that you know so it won't start in park all like or start and drive whatever all that stuff it's all inner loop connected so when they thinned out this harness they would have to cut things and splice them together to get them to connect right to the bcm i suspect this is my prediction somewhere in there there's a solder joint or a butt connector that has come apart and we can't see it because it's got fresh clean loom over it so there's no visual signs of breakage or anything like that that's my prediction let's see how it works out you ready to tear this apart you gonna pack some shirts staplesonautoworks.com keep her busy well pulled the whole loom back and looked at all this and you can see here where they kind of added things there's two spots but this one this is the one i fixed what i'm getting to right now that is one of the high speed uh can bus wires whatever i found it was sliced a little bit and had a couple broken strands oh you can see that there's i don't know three broken strands in there and i think there's only like six or seven in the whole wire well that might have something to do with it because jeff heinz told me that if it's one of those can bus wires and it's got a couple broken strands in it that could affect the resistance and everything of the whole can bus nonsense so cut the broken piece out and fixed it and i'm going to throw the thing back um under the car i'm plugging in the transmission and see what it does i hope
