What happens here
To ensure your new plantings thrive, install an irrigation system within the newly shaped planting bed. Start by digging shallow trenches (typically 6-8 inches deep) using a trenching shovel or a mechanical trencher. Lay out the main irrigation tubing (e.g., poly pipe) within these trenches, connecting it to a water source (like an outdoor spigot or main line). Strategically place drip emitters or micro-sprinkler heads throughout the bed, ensuring even water coverage for all plant types. Connect these emitters/sprinklers to the main tubing using appropriate connectors and fittings. Use a pipe cutter or utility knife to make clean cuts in the tubing. Install a timer/controller for automated watering if desired. Test the system thoroughly for leaks before burying the lines.
Goal: Set up an efficient watering system for the new planting bed
Tools and materials
- Hose Clamp Tool — Securing connections on certain types of irrigation systems
- Pipe Cutter — Making clean cuts in irrigation tubing
- Trenching Shovel — Digging narrow trenches for irrigation tubing
- Connectors and Fittings — Assembling the irrigation system (e.g., elbows, tees, reducers)
- Drip Emitters or Micro-Sprinklers — Delivering water directly to plants or specific areas
- Irrigation Tubing — The main lines for water delivery (e.g., poly pipe)
- PVC Primer and Cement — Creating strong, leak-proof seals if using PVC components
- Timer/Controller — Automating the watering schedule
