What happens here

This project details the complete process of replacing a leaky, hard-wired garbage disposal with a new unit. The instructions cover all necessary safety precautions, including shutting off power at the breaker, as well as the mechanical and plumbing steps. These include disconnecting the old unit's drain pipe and electrical wiring, removing the old mounting assembly, cleaning the sink drain opening, installing a new flange with plumber's putty, securing the new mounting assembly, wiring the new disposal, and finally mounting the unit and reconnecting the drain for a leak-free test.

We have got a pretty good leak going on out of this garbage disposal. If folks that fix it guy here. My mother-in-law's Badger 5 started leaking through the bottom. We're going to swap it out. We're putting in a new Insincorator, half horse 5 XL garbage disposal. So come along. Let's get to fixing. It might look like it's pretty new and we are definitely working with the clearance issue. This big reverse osmosis tank here is only going to fit in a certain locale. We have to do something with that drain a little bit later. But for right now we just need to get this leak stopped and get her back up and running. So one of the first things we want to do is locate what kind of power supply. That right there tells me that this is not a plug-in type of supply. This is actually a direct power supply and you can see it. I can trace it all the way back here behind the rolls to the switch. Still runs just leaking. Make sure that's in the off position. We'll cover it up with some rolls. Find ourselves a panel. Seven nine. We're going to get started here. So you're going to want to get back here. There's a screw here and a screw here. Oh my gosh. Let's go down there. We'll grab yourself a little three eighths wrench like this one. And then it pops off pretty easy. This drain right here will just slide right out of your way. This is one of the bolts that holds the garbage disposal drain flange on. You can see that it has a place for a flathead screwdriver or a three eighths wrench. My mother-in-law, she's replaced exactly two of these over the years. She's told me stick one of these in two slots. There's three slots like this. Grab one and one, one and the other, and then just turn. And then this is just going to pop right off that rest of the way off there and that just removes. I miss my own tools right now. So halfway through, fitting around with this, I realized I've got the cure. Yeah. Smaller coming off, works out great. Perfect. There we go. Okay, that spun off of there. So right now as this stands, we actually could just put our new disposal on, hook it up with a new gasket, wire it back up, and it would work. But a new collar will make it look good. You never know if this thing will start leaking tomorrow. So you've got three screws right here. It's counterclockwise and all three of these. These older style screws are going to be flat heads. Get your flat head underneath here. And you're going to want to pop this ring right here down. This will pop off. That'll pop down. And this pops up. This is a good reason to change this out. It was not leaking from here. There is not a lot of putty on this side. And it didn't break off. It's just gunk. Just get this nice new seal fresh packed around there. You know, you're not going to have an issue. That plumber's putty is so dried out. I think that's a good argument right there for silicone, but I bought plumber's putty. New collar, all your new accessories and a new disposal. Same as the old. I like just take the old one, stick it right back in the new box. New collar comes flat or Phillips. I feel like you can torque a little bit better. With the Phillips option. Screw these all the way up to the end. Get in here with a flat head and pop this ring. Take all this apart. Leave this assembled this way. This is exactly how it's going to go on. Grab ourselves some bodys plumber putty. Nice and pliable. Get yourself hooked up all the way around. Flatten it out. I'm going to have some lap over on this. And it's going to be especially with the disposal. It's not going to matter so much because the way this ring tightens down, it's actually going to squirt this out all over the place. So just get it nice and flatten down. Just get that lined up straight. Give it a good push. I like to take something a little heavy and just stick it down right on the top of this so it doesn't move. Or you can have somebody hold it, but I'm home alone. Like Kevin McAllister. I've got this line right here going through here. I don't want to do anything with it. I don't want to take it apart because I don't want something to leak. So we just leave it right like that. And this is what you got to work with sometime. Oh, this works best laying down with your head inside of the cabinet. Get all this put up on here like so. Get these things out of your way. This piece right here. I like to get one side on there started. Then just follow it around kind of keeping this side held on. And that's just going to clip right in place. Make sure all these are tightened up evenly. And then take your screwdriver and continue to tighten them up evenly. So next sort of business is going to be to get the power put back in. Let's get that out of our way. We'll take this bad boy. It came out. We'll slap it right back in. Get that bad boy popped in where it's nice and tight. Get the ground wrapped around there. Get this piece popped back on here. Get a wire nut on the neutral. Get a wire nut on the hot. That's good. Pop that back in there. If you have a dishwasher that connects to your old disposal, you're going to want to make sure you knock out the plug in there. But R does not go right there. So all we're going to do is we are going to put this new gasket right here. It's going to end up going right here where this connection is right here. This is good. Looking we don't have to take any of that apart. And now we're ready to put this back on. Well, let's get that out of our way. Let's get that out of our way. I'll grab two of these wrenches again because that's how I like to roll with these. You get that to right there. Get it right up on here like this. Clip that in place. That's going to secure it. Making sure your disposal is not going to go anywhere. We're going to have to spin this just a little bit more to get it lined up in place. We're going to grab our new little bolts right here. Screw these in place. Get this tightened down the whole way. Just go until they're snug. That's all done and hooked up in there. Really a tight space. But should be good. We'll remove our thing. Oh, look at that. Pat your channel locks in this fast back right here. You can do a lot of plumbing jobs. Pull the drain. Turn the breaker back on. We'll remove our lockout tag out and turn this disposal on. Oh yeah, that sounds good. Sound just let it run for a while. Let this disposal run. Make sure we got no leaks down here anywhere. All the garbage packed away neatly in this box. New disposal is in and we're rocking and rolling. I really hope this video helped you. Guys, please subscribe. Click the like button.
