What happens here
Before any physical work begins, thoroughly plan the driveway layout and assess the site. Mark the desired area for the permeable driveway using marking paint or stakes and string. Excavate the area to the required depth, typically 12 to 24 inches, depending on soil conditions and expected vehicle load. Ensure the subgrade is properly sloped (usually 1-2%) for drainage and compacted using a plate compactor. Consider installing an edge restraint system (such as plastic or metal edging, or concrete curb) around the perimeter to contain the base layers and pavers.
Goal: Prepare the driveway area for permeable paver installation by excavating and establishing subgrade.
Tools and materials
- Edge Restraint System — Containing the base layers and pavers
- Level — Checking the slope and level of the subgrade
- Marking Paint or Stakes and String — Outlining the driveway area
- Measuring Tape — Measuring the driveway dimensions
- Plate Compactor — Compacting the subgrade
- Rake — Grading and leveling the excavated area
- Shovel — Manual excavation
