What happens here

After preparing the subgrade, lay a geotextile fabric across the entire excavated area. This fabric separates the subgrade from the base layers, preventing migration of fines and maintaining drainage. Overlap seams by at least 12 inches. Next, install the aggregate base layers. Typically, this involves a layer of larger, open-graded aggregate (e.g., 2-4 inches deep, 3/4-inch to 1.5-inch clean stone) followed by a layer of smaller aggregate (e.g., 4-8 inches deep, 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch clean stone). Each layer should be spread evenly, compacted with the plate compactor, and carefully leveled to ensure a stable and permeable foundation.

Goal: Create a stable and permeable foundation for the pavers.

Tools and materials

  • Geotextile Fabric — Separating soil layers and maintaining permeability
  • Level or String Line — Ensuring proper grading and level
  • Plate Compactor — Compacting aggregate layers
  • Rake — Leveling aggregate
  • Shovel — Spreading aggregate
  • Open-Graded Aggregate — Base layer for drainage and support
