What happens here
The engine block moves to a Sunnen cylinder hone, a computerized CNC honing machine. This machine precisely hones the cylinders to be perfectly round and straight, also creating a specific cross-hatch surface finish. Torque plates are installed on the deck surface during honing to simulate the clamping pressure of the cylinder heads, preventing cylinder distortion. A profilometer, equipped with a ruby-tipped stylus, is used to analyze the surface finish, measuring peaks, valleys, and their distribution (Ra, Rpk, Rvk values) to optimize oil retention for ring sealing.
Goal: Achieve precise cylinder geometry and optimal surface finish
Tools and materials
- Profilometer J-Tech — Analyzing the cylinder surface finish for oil retention
- Ruby-Tipped Stylus — Measuring surface roughness with the profilometer
- Sunnen Cylinder Hone Machine Sunnen — Precisely honing cylinders to final dimensions and surface finish
- Torque Plates — Simulating cylinder head clamping pressure during honing
- Honing Oil — Lubricating and cooling during the honing process
