What happens here

After all individual lighting fixtures are installed and their wiring is routed, the final crucial step is to connect them to the main power source and test the entire system. Consolidate all low-voltage wires at a central point, typically near a weatherproof outdoor transformer. Connect the wires from the lighting fixtures to the output terminals of the low-voltage transformer, ensuring correct polarity (positive to positive, negative to negative). Connect the transformer's input to a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) protected outdoor outlet using an appropriate outdoor-rated extension cord or by direct wiring according to local codes. Once connected, turn on the power at the outlet and verify that all lights are functioning correctly and illuminating as planned. Make any necessary adjustments to fixture positioning or wiring connections.

Goal: Energize and verify the functionality of the entire outdoor lighting setup.

Tools and materials

  • GFCI Protected Outdoor Outlet — Providing safe electrical power to the transformer
  • Low-Voltage Outdoor Transformer — Converting household voltage to low-voltage for the lighting system
  • Multimeter — Troubleshooting electrical connections and verifying voltage
  • Outdoor Junction Boxes — Providing weatherproof enclosures for complex wire splices
  • Outdoor-Rated Extension Cord — Connecting the transformer to the GFCI outlet (if not hardwired)
  • Screwdriver — Tightening terminal screws on the transformer and outlet covers
  • Wire Strippers — Preparing low-voltage wires for connection to the transformer
