Locate Starter Solenoid and Identify Connections

What happens here

Locate the starter solenoid under the hood of the vehicle. In many older Ford trucks (like the one shown), the solenoid is mounted on the fender wall near the battery. Identify the three main electrical connections: the large positive battery cable coming from the battery, the large cable going to the starter motor, and the smaller ignition wire (often labeled 'S' for start) that sends a signal from the ignition switch.
