I NEED HELP WITH MY FORD TRUCK!

What happens here

If the previous test confirmed that the solenoid is receiving an ignition signal, proceed to directly test the starter motor by bypassing the solenoid. Take a small gauge jumper wire (a small screwdriver can also be used with extreme caution) and connect one end to the large positive battery post on the solenoid (the one connected directly to the battery's positive terminal, which is always live). Briefly and carefully touch the other end of the jumper wire to the small 'S' terminal of the solenoid. If the starter motor cranks the engine, it indicates that the starter motor is functional, and the starter solenoid is faulty. If the starter motor does not crank, the issue is likely with the starter motor itself or a weak battery, provided the main battery connections are clean and tight.

Goal: Directly test the starter motor to diagnose a faulty solenoid

Tools and materials

  • Jumper Wire — Bypassing the solenoid to send power directly to the starter motor
  • Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes from sparks
  • Vehicle Ford — The vehicle being tested
  • Work Gloves — Protecting hands during electrical work
