What happens here
This project details the construction of a custom princess-themed desk and vanity built directly into a bedroom wall. The process begins with planning and laying out the design on the wall using painter's tape, followed by cutting and assembling plywood cabinet carcasses. Custom features include an arched desk area, integrated shelving, and a hidden closet with a full-length mirror and lights for dress-up. The project culminates in painting the unit a light pink color and installing doors, drawers, and decorative hardware.

(19,998 characters)3 2 1 you like it this is my four-year-old daughter Harper's room she is a princess and she acts like it we built her this beautiful princess bunk bed a few years ago and she loves anything pink and we thought it'd be an incredible idea to build her a princess desk all with an ability to draw on it storage for her toys and the most important cool aspect of it have a makeup section to it that she could dress up and do all the princess things we could ever imagine so let's make her dream come true let's do it so here's the plan that we we by we I mean Irena came up with she wants this kind of Center desk she wants an arch to match her bunk bed she wants this doily looking countertop desk part uh storage on the sides a lot of enclosed stuff except on top it's going to be exposed so you can decorate it and then this is where the big magic is going to happen there's going to be a full standing uh almost like I don't know Pantry thing huge closet that opens up and inside is going to be a f- length mirror probably going to light that sucker up and have all her princess dresses and her princess shoes all in there that she could try them on and look at herself and and do all the cute princessy things I'm super excited to see her the look on her face uh cuz it's going to be pink what I'm not excited about is building a bunch of cabinets drawers doors shelves desks carcasses face frames everything it's a lengthy process it's going to be expensive process but let's get started so the best way I can figure this out proportionally to a little girl's height and spatial awareness is the old blue tape trick we're going to lay our blueprint out and then go from [Music] there okay now I feel good about getting started this is the the the makeup dress up stuff this is the desk with the arch uh cabinets cabinets cabinets open shelving uh another cabinet here with shelving inside of it drawers doily looking thing cuz she loves doilies let's get started [Music] upside [Music] down oh that's a big boy that's a probably third biggest cabinet I ever built woo it's big I'm going to throw some uh face frames on this thing 1X two popler get the thing ready and then we'll start ripping off the baseboards put our tow kick on and then we'll start putting it [Music] together so I intentionally I'm going with a non traditional toe kick usually toe kicks go in by like 3 and 1/2 in and 4 and 1/2 in tall I didn't want that I wanted to have a beefier look so I just recessed it the thickness of my face frame so when I put my baseboard up to it it's going to be Plum and flush with this uh and at that point it's just going to look like this massive Tower so I thought about it ahead don't think I'm a complete idiot at least not this time I'm not usually you know that goes without saying [Music] life can gets busy right between work and family and all the to-do list that we have we often forget to take care of ourselves well that is why I'm excited to talk about the sponsors of today's video better help you see therapy used to be a very difficult thing to do you have to go find a recommendation from somebody who's had a good experience with their therapist take time off work drive to the appointment only to hope that you found somebody who understands what you're going through look we all have good days and we have bad days sometimes for me it's all sunny days like today and other times it's kind of dark cloudy in my head and I don't know what's wrong that's why talking to somebody helps you navigate and process those thoughts and emotions well that's where better help comes in they make it convenient for you to get the help you need you see better help connects you with a licensed therapist who is trained to listen and give you helpful unbiased advice you can connect them from a phone call a computer via chat messaging however you feel most comfortable communicating it's the easiest possible way to start talking to a therapist today you'll be matched with a licensed therapist and as little as 48 hours so you can get started very very fast first you go to the website betterhelp.com slm mrbilit you answer a few simple questions and better help will match you to a professional who has years of experience helping people with struggles like you it's never too late to start getting help that you deserve thank you better help for partnering with us now let's get back to this video you think that's a good height for that's really cute a little girl that's this tall to it's it will grow with her which is great I think if we put like a mirror yeah right here and have like hooks for her dresses maybe you could even do like a drawer two for her shoes more drawers no I'll do I'll do a shelf I'll do a shelf okay do like a little shelf for her shoes maybe if like one above another so it like rolls out I don't know just I have so many make sure you watch this video in 2025 but it'll be cute like because as she grows you know girls want a fulls siiz mirror always watch weell this house in a year the next girl can grow will love it all right moving on to these cabinets originally I was going to break it up into two different cabinets but because we need this Arch to be in the same plane we got to essentially replicate the same width and the same height to make sure that our shelves going forward stay [Music] leveled I'm not going to lie I was a little anxious this morning cuz I decided to build this style literally 2 hours before we started filming so uh I feel so much more uh confident that it's going to look so awesome what to do next I think the smart move is to connect this so we're going to figure out what we're going to do for the desk and then we're going to start cutting our arch in our in our in our plywood that's what that is I'm tired and then we'll attach it through here question is do I just want it here or there's a lot of variables I don't know if I want to just the exterior one which I could have down lighting actually I like that idea more let's do that all right we need our Circle here or the arch uh got my middle line here going to screw this in carry this with a pencil around that should be dead nuts I think and then I'll just cut off any excess on top put pazoles in the side and the top and then that'll allow for us to screw this thing in almost kind of bridging this all together guys huge announcement we're launching a brand new channel Mr builded kids over the years we have so many kids that watch our videos with their parents and it's super awesome so we had a great idea of starting a brand new YouTube channel with my kids where we build cool things for them like this crazy cool skate ramp that they've always wanted me to build they're building alongside with me we're encouraging them to explore their creativity and teaching them how to work with their hands as you can imagine this channel is super chaotic the process is super crazy but it's very satisfying to see the kids come up with an idea and bring it to life we're teaching them them safety we teaching them techniques we teaching them how to fix problems that you're constantly coming across so click the link in the description below or hit up Mr build kids on YouTube please subscribe share with your friends I hope you guys enjoyed because we have so many projects lined up and they're so fun to watch here's what I'm not excited about I like the arch don't get me wrong I don't like how bland it is now if you look at the arch right there I took some PVC uh trim molding and I basically curved it so you can actually bend it and then I glued it and screwed it in and I think in order to give that kind of three-dimensional look we need to do that and it'll look nice it'll it'll go flush with this trim piece and then it'll come up my only hesitation is is making transitions here worst case SC we might have to run it all the way down but we'll see I got to go pick some of that trim and figure out what kind of desk part we're going to use cuz uh I don't want to use fly we got to use something sturdier 1 th000 curve Cuts later pray this this thing doesn't snap I am very happy with that let me see if I need to make just like five more Cuts or something yeah I need I need two more inches of cuts okay okay two more inches of cuts see it's not that hard it's not that hard is it yeah 1,000 Cuts that's what this is oh that is dead nuts baby woo doeses that feel good or what uh all these curves I'll have to Wood fill them in and sand them which that's annoying as heck but we got our Arch here uh kind of silicone it on then put some screws and some tape hopefully and uh I think that'll be good for the holding it in place for the tabletop the desk part I think we're going to utilize a space to actually use create a drawer for pencils and stuff so we're going to create something about 5 in deep and then Hollow it out you can pull out this drawer and I think she wants some kind of little doily thing below I don't know what that means but we're going to figure that out once we cross that [Music] bridge a 41 and a qu this supposed to be 43 and a quar how did I mess that up you're building a new one [Music] all right I had to get creative with attach of the face Ram here because the wood kept splitting on the ends besides it's so small there's no way to secure the pocket holes so just Brad naem lots of glue uh now we're going to install it we're just going to put screws from inside to the sides to the back stud and the other side and the sucker ain't going nowhere [Music] that's a first W that everything's sliding and smoothly look at this fits perfectly like an eigh both way H the stars are aligning the construction gods are happy and it's nuts to butts over here look at this I could not be happier all miracles all lined up let's do one more section of straight up cabinet doors this is for storage stuff that we don't need to access regularly but it's high enough with a little stool to get [Music] it was able to line up these styles with this section here I remember if you remember my mudroom video the comment section destroyed me because my upper cabinets doors didn't line up with my lowers it's a whole to do with it so not going to make that mistake twice we got one more my Band-Aid is coming off here oh well we got one more cabinet to put in here I make sure to overlap my face frame so we could go snug inside of it and after that that section is done this thing's looking massive [Music] that's freaking cool what do you think is that cool are you done paint it I'm going to paint it what color you want to paint it a purple and pink you got it I want purple on the top and pink you got a boss I purple Sparkles purple Sparkles too we'll do purple Sparkles not all of the purple just some of the purple that's one purple all okay bossy I the one I thep you got it purple Sparkles but not the Super glary ones you're kind of between a rock and a hard place you don't need to put shelves on the very very top just cuz what are you going to put there so what we're thinking of doing is just closing that completely off of plywood and then trimming it all out right so like like a nice box trim to bring it more texture I guess look at me using these interior design words and then after that's done we'll be able to start working on the doors and the drawers fortunately it's not too many drawers but they're big old doors all right today it's the day that I've been actually dreading for the most for this build reason why it's doors and drawers there's a lot of them uh I don't mind building them as long as it's like one or two but building with 1 2 3 four five 6 7 8 nine doors and three drawers well three drawers is not the problem so it's just a lot now there's going to be two styles that we're working with the overall style for the top pieces the doors are going to be shaker style classic style rail single panel in the middle uh that's going to be this the design for the drawer as well so Irena wanted to have some texture to it and I get it that's one of the design things I'm kind of learning so for texture for the two giant doors that open up one for the dress up section and then one for the storage section uh we're going to use this I found this in the wing coating it's just a wall panel uh it's 516 thick so it's a little bit thicker than classic4 in uh we're going to run it ly and then we're going to do the Shaker Styles and rails but this is going to be our floating panel in the middle I think that's going to look awesome unfortunately I couldn't find anything raw wood that's similar to the p uh Pine that we're working with but we'll paint it it'll look awesome and uh I almost think it's going to look better than the bunk bed but only one way to find out is let's start working [Applause] [Music] woo take it down take it down it down when it comes to doors I've always done the router method have the bit make the Styles make the rails have them interlocked but I didn't want to bring my router table all the way out here so I try this whole DIY method that I keep seeing on Pinterest well they'll do their rabbit Channel and then they'll or the D and then they'll put pocket holes it's not as easy as I thought it would be and a lot of it has to do with when you're cutting your rabbit holes in here the channels uh if you cut all the way through your pocket holes are not going to connect there's no not enough meat there for it so I've been trying to cut it short and then bevel over the edges for this panel this took longer than I expected hopefully the second version is going to look better sometimes the fancier method is better and easier to stop my blade around here so there's a small radius right there that this radius fits into comfortably lots of radiuses going on and so far on this version it's actually working out pretty dang well [Music] all right final verdict I miss working with my router table next time I'm building cabinets I'm definitely bringing that back but Shaker door second version of The Doors coming up these are the top stuff uh look nice and clean this is also going to be the same thing that we're use for the two drawers um I got to build a lot of these uh next up let's start building those set drawers so full transparency I goofed up where I put my pocket holes typically I put them on the front and the back because the back you won't see and the front there'll be a front drawer face but I goofed on this one didn't want to waste material so it'll be like the bottom drawer the the ugly drawer I guess uh all I got to do now is throw some edgeband veneer on this get it all sanded lightly and then we'll start uh installing them once I bang out the rest of these [Music] doors originally I was going to put more shelves up here but you can't reach it from down below it's just way too high you're going to need to get a ladder this is basically the highest point you can do it so to give this a grand look we're going to put a piece of plywood on top and then trim it out to match all the patterns of our door faces or drawer faces uh and I know you guys are destroy me in the comments saying you could have made shelves you could do shelves I'm not going to do shelves I'm going to block this thing out it's going to look awesome we got plenty of space here and secure it I'm going to make this e plywood down secure brackets down so I can screw into it and uh kind of go from there [Music] when this thing is toght well that was uh easy peasy wasn't it that was miserable I made a mistake of having this end piece be a little too long [Music] this thing is ginormous absolutely ginormous going all the way to the top also makes the room a little bit smaller but we're okay with that we're planning cabinet doors look incredible I still need to do a final adjustment on them um put pocket uh plugs in there kind of get the thing all primed up when it's time but in the meantime let's start trimming out that sucker I want to put the doors up so I could see kind of where to line up my Styles and rail so you kind of sequentially goes up and down without any kind of Assortment it's all coming together we got a couple more things before we start priming and sanding everything and caulking uh we need to put built a completely unique drawer face here she wanted these like doily looking things there's a name for it I don't know and if I did know it you should laugh at me but essentially it's just these little grooves going like that I don't have a quick way of doing that so unfortunately I'm going to have to stencil it and then freehand it with a jigsaw which I not excited about cuz it doesn't come out clean but that means we're just going to have to earn it back with the sanding [Music] not bad at all I mean it's not my style that I would like for my desk before a little girl I think it'll do okay I got the last of the things I need to build I'm still going to throw one shelf in here put a shelf inside the bottom there and then put a couple of divider shelves in there that's easy peasy uh and then I'm going to start lightly sanding all the uh wood filler caulk everything caulk a lot actually including this and then get thing ready for priming see you in a bit big day for the program today folks big big day got some cocking to do up there that's how you say cocking don't be inappropriate once that's dry we're going to shoot our first coat of primer the primer I got it says I can wait an hour and then start painting which is great and then we'll shoot our first base coat which that that color is going to be wild well nothing to it but to do it let's [Music] so the base paint I'm not going to I'm going to butcher the way I'm going to say it chaset sand chaset sand 75% concentration so it's got to be a little bit uh lighter I really have this weird feeling inside that we're going to paint this and arena is going to be like uh can we also paint something else a different like I'm sure that's going to come up so make sure you tune stay tuned to see um if I'm going to have a panic attack on this channel good news is the misss loves the color loves how everything legs out uh so that's good that there's a win but here's the crummy thing the only second color I have to introduce here is just for this little trim piece so I had to spend 50 bucks to just get a qut of this uh and it's just another version of this pinkish looking color this one's called hashed Auburn 75% light meaning they just dilute it 25% so I just got paint it's nice it's not going to take me too long it's annoying cuz I got crevices it's also annoying that I spend 50 bucks just for this little strip Story of My Life it's looking really good as far as little details Hardware we've kind of been our go-to has always been these brass uh Hardware these are on Amazon I'll link them they're solid they're like solid brass they're not just like some cheap stuff uh I think they'll look really cool going to throw these on last drawer faces and then I got something really cool coming in here that we're going to throw in uh that's going to be perfect for a little girl to dress up so here's what I got going we got a mirror that's going to sit right in here nice and low and then to make sure we have adequate lighting this is probably what I'm most excited about I found on Amazon these I want to call them makeup lights but the they're the stuff that you'd see like in Hollywood they would sit in front of a mirror and then there's lights all the way around it so these are just like low bodage uh LEDs that we're going to surround it around my only concern is I can't hide these wires so I'll just have to have to either run it around the corners of the edge and kind of press the wires into the corners or just do a really dang good job about surrounding them or actually I wonder if I could fit them behind the mirror we'll see we'll see whichever one works throw the mirror on First and kind of go from there now Harper…
