How to wire an outlet

What happens here

First, carefully remove the outer jacket of the electrical wire to expose the individual insulated wires (typically black, white, and bare/green). Next, locate the strip gauge on the back of the new electrical outlet. Use this gauge to measure the correct length of insulation to remove from each individual wire. Then, use wire strippers to precisely remove the insulation from the black (hot), white (neutral), and green or bare copper (ground) wires.

Goal: Strip insulation from the electrical wires to the correct length.

Tools and materials

  • Outlet — Using its built-in strip gauge to measure proper insulation removal length
  • Wire Strippers — Removing the insulation from the electrical wires
  • Electrical Wire — The conductors for the outlet connection

What they say

Hide

First things first, turn off the correct breaker. Showing no voltage. Go ahead and strip your wire. Once you got the jacket off, go ahead and pull the paper off. Right on the back of the outlet, there's a strip gauge. Go ahead and hold that up to your wire, and that'll tell you how much wire you have to strip off of here. Get your wire cutter, strip it. Repeat that process for the black one. Once you have your wires stripped, now you're going to J-hook them. For your white one, I like to bring it towards me.
