How To Stain Cedar House Siding. DIY How to stain a house. Exterior house painting tips.

What happens here

Before applying the main coat of stain, manually brush the laps and the top and bottom edges of the cedar siding boards with stain. This process, known as "back brushing," is crucial for areas that receive significant weather exposure and water. It ensures deeper absorption of the stain into the wood, providing better protection and durability for these vulnerable spots before the main spray application. No priming is required as the Sherwin-Williams Woodscapes product is designed to absorb directly into the wood. The siding should have been previously powerwashed to remove any loose debris or old finishes.

Goal: Ensure deep stain penetration into vulnerable areas of cedar siding.

Up top this roof here, we've got some cedar siding that we've already powerwashed. And you can see there's a lot of exposed wood, but we're using a product from Sher Williams called Woodscapes. And the Woodscapes goes right over the top of the wood and it actually absorbs into the wood, so you don't need to prime it. And we've got these laps and these tops and bottoms of these boards right here. And we're actually hand brushing the the tops of the boards first and then we're going to go back and spray them. I'm using a brush just to go along here and back brush it first. And the tops of these laps get a lot of weather, get a lot of water, and so they get pretty beat up and so it's good to back brush them with stain first prior to spraying it with the stain. And then we're going to go back and spray it with our Graco 695 sprayer. We're going to be using a 515 tip at a pretty low pressure cuz it's a stain and it's pretty watery. We're going to be using about 1,800 PSI pressure. So, I'm going to go along. I'm going to back brush all these laps right here.
