What happens here

The video starts with an overview of power-washed cedar siding that needs staining. The presenter introduces Sherwin Williams Woodscapes stain, noting it absorbs into the wood, negating the need for a primer. He begins hand-brushing the laps, as well as the tops and bottoms of the cedar boards. These areas are highlighted as being particularly exposed to weather and requiring special attention for thorough coverage.

Goal: Ensure thorough coverage of weather-exposed areas of cedar siding.

Tools and materials

  • Bucket — Holding the stain for manual application
  • Paint brush — Applying stain to laps and edges by hand

Hide

Up top this roof here, we've got some cedar siding that we've already powerwashed. And you can see there's a lot of exposed wood, but we're using a product from Sher Williams called Woodscapes. And the Woodscapes goes right over the top of the wood and it actually absorbs into the wood, so you don't need to prime it. And we've got these laps and these tops and bottoms of these boards right here. And we're actually hand brushing the the tops of the boards first and then we're going to go back and spray them. I'm using a brush just to go along here and back brush it first. And the tops of these laps get a lot of weather, get a lot of water, and so they get pretty beat up and so it's good to back brush them with stain first prior to spraying it with the stain. And then we're going to go back and spray it with our Graco 695 sprayer. We're going to be using a 515 tip at a pretty low pressure cuz it's a stain and it's pretty watery. We're going to be using about 1,800 PSI pressure. So, I'm going to go along. I'm going to back brush all these laps right here. And then we're going to go back and spray it. And then we're going to back brush and back roll the actual face of the boards with our nap after it's been sprayed. And we'll show you how we go about doing that right now.
