Marking the Roof Cutout
At 6:08 in
How to install a wood burning stove in a steel building or carport or barn.
What happens here
On a ladder, the narrator uses a plumb bob to accurately mark the center point on the metal roof directly above the stove pipe. He drops the plumb bob down the pipe, allows it to settle, and marks the spot on the roof. He then uses a self-tapping screw at this center point as an anchor for drawing the cut circle. He attaches a piece of wire to the screw, ties a Sharpie to the other end, and uses it like a compass to draw a circular cut line. This line defines a 13-inch diameter hole, based on the 6.5-inch radius determined from the flashing dimensions (half the 14-inch inner diameter of the flashing, with a small deduction for a tight fit).
Goal: Accurately mark the chimney hole on the metal roof.
Tools and materials
- Cordless Drill DeWalt — Driving the self-tapping screw
- Hammer — Using with a punch to mark the center
- Ladder — Reaching the roof from inside the building
- Measuring Tape — Measuring the radius for the circular cutout
- Plumb Bob — Accurately marking the center point of the chimney hole on the roof
- Punch — Making an initial indent for the self-tapping screw
- Self-Tapping Screw — Creating a pivot point for drawing the circle and for initial drilling
- Sharpie Marker — Marking the cut line on the roof
- Wire/String — Used with a Sharpie to draw a perfect circle for the cutout
