What happens here

This project details the step-by-step process of framing a partition wall in a garage, from marking out the layout and anchoring the base plate to the concrete floor, to installing vertical studs and horizontal blocking. The goal is to create a functional separation between a workshop area and a parking space, while also improving the aesthetic for video production.

hey guys Alex seems looking here from mr. builded welcome to my workshop you see a little bit of a mess behind me and it is driving me insane I'm all about organization and getting myself ready for the new year's day as you could see well before you can see you can hear my throat I'm dealing with something for like a week and a half now I'm over it but let's get back to it as you can see behind me we got an absolute mess we got crap here we got junk all over the place so here's what we're doing on today's project my wife parks right over here I work right over there let me show you that's my mess that's me doing - so one of the things I want to do is I want to create a really nice wall going up top to bottom side to side and probably just end it right over here I think it'll be really nice I think it'll keep the dust out of her side I think they'll make the video stuff from that side a whole lot of better I won't loose any lighting and that's what I want to do so let me show you how we're gonna do it so first order of business I want to find the stats that are in the swab because I want this wall to be anchored top bottom and into the wall here I don't want to cut any corners so first things first let's grab our step behind a pencil and Mark out where everything is so if you're an inspector or you do this for a living please be nice in the comments below come on man we're all learning let's go all right so we got our stuff found on the wall turns out there's a line like a nice crisp taping line that goes completely to the top from the stud here to the trusses and so I knocked out a little bit seems like it's an actual you know stud or trust going completely across so we're gonna trust that's our line this is our line so now all we got to do is find a completely linear line on the concrete so our walls don't warped let's see let me show you the tool that I got for so this is what I have I have this little laser it's a it's a little X plus looking sine laser it's really great because we're gonna put it on the ground it's gonna self-leveling do that in there we're gonna put the ground it's gonna shoot a laser beam on the ceiling on the wall and on the ground and it's gonna allow us to find the perfect 90 square so let's see what we can do with it okay so we found our lines on the wall we found the lines on the ceiling and right now we just established our line on the ground this is not a piece of pressure-treated lumber but it's a long piece so I'm gonna lay it down and I'm gonna use my sharpie or chalk if you have our marker or whatever and I'm gonna make a fine crisp line along so I can start with the bottom the pressure-treated lumber will throw a lag bolts for the concrete into it and then we'll put one on top and then the side and then we'll start building in the rest of the frame let's get to it so I screwed up on something I think the walls too much this way what I don't want to do is I don't want to take away from this parking spot here we're gonna do this house for a very long time but I don't want the next elders to be like wow this is a small parking spot so I think what I'm gonna do is I'm going to move it for another 16 inches that way yeah well give me too much room working in my shop but I think overall will preserve this space so let me redo this we'll do the same thing but push it that way [Music] alright step of this next operation we're gonna be start anchoring the bottom part of the board we're going to be using actually a weatherproof board and we're a start anchoring right into the concrete so for that application we're going to use these anchoring bolts that I found at my local hardware store these ones are two three-quarter inches long which is gonna be plenty to go through the board into my concrete far enough not to split this floor inch thick concrete so we're going to use that they're recommending to use a pre drilling pilot hole for your concrete they say drill it about a quarter inch past the overall length of the bolt you're going to be using so I got my little marker on top this is a carbide tip so I should go a lot smoother and then the last drill that I'm taking is just a drill bit to pre-drill the wood afterwards I'm going to switch to drat that drill bit and then we're gonna start lagging this into the concrete so we're gonna place one every about two feet so let's rock and roll all right so I guess today's gonna be a day of screwing up so I everything was fine the only I screwed up was is the drill bit for the wood or for the concrete is a little bit shorter the measurement is correct my flag is correct it's just it's not long enough to go through the wood and then through the concrete so what I'm going to do is I'm going to pre-drill it create a little marker move the wood and then drill it all the way through hopefully I don't screw up the entire line so that all the holes from the wood into the concrete line up once we're done so let's get it done the harder way I guess okay so drilling through concrete it's a lot more difficult than I thought it would be a little bit of advice if you're gonna do it I know some drills have a hammer setting go get a nice hammer drill that you can just go right through it with even speed and pressure I probably destroyed my bit and I probably made a lot more difficult than it should be so take it from me go get the right tool for me but nonetheless we've drilled our holes in the concrete they're perfect we're gonna take our pressure treated two by fours put it on top and then we got those blue lag bolts we're gonna put on top specifically for concrete and then we're gonna put a fat washer on there so it gives a little more strength I got them spread out about every two feet so let's get cracking away oh boy oh boy oh boy it's all lined up it is so strong look I'll tell you what drilling is a pain in concrete but man putting those lag bolts into it is so nice like you could really feel the strength in it I've never done it that's really cool so now comes I think the slightly easier part all we got to do now is put the the part on top the 2x4 and then one on the bottom here and then one crossing here and then put all you know 16 on center let's get to it [Music] so what I'm simply doing right now is I have that little HVAC system tube going around so I'm gonna grab my skill set or jigsaw and I'm gonna create a silhouette around us so I can be a nice tight fit and I'll frame around it so we know what the drywall be a cleaner look it's never perfect it never is so I turn down the lights because I could see the Loretto laser a lot easier on the ceiling on the wall and the bottom of the initial line so we'll keep the lights down I'll put the top beam and the side and then this part and then we'll turn the lights on to do the framing for the rest let's go [Music] alright folks this is the fun part this is where we get our framing gun a we are shooting three and a half inch nails my compressors right behind me and we're gonna get to work and set these puppies 16 on center let's rock'n'roll oh man this thing is so much fun to use if you've never used a framing gun I encourage you to go and use one it is nothing like a brad nailer if that's what you think and there's so much power behind the sucker I mean it kind it kicks you back a little bit it's got these little tiny claws in the front for you to jab right into the wood but yeah the frame is up everything 16 on center except obviously over there because we got some modifications and then I'm gonna put some cross beams across I said people say you have to some people don't I don't know what you have to do or not I'm just gonna go a little bit above and beyond and not worry about it later so let's go put that on real quick while there she is folks I am so excited this is my very first time I framed a wall let alone put it right into the concrete flooring and ecstatic it is solid as a rock I went back and put extra nails and screws the only time I use that nail gun was just to get it started so everything is bolted and screwed and strong put a reinforcement pieces which is an excellent addition because it keeps it from wobbling it's super stiff I'm so so excited I learned a lot along the way like I mentioned about using lags into the concrete using a proper hammer drill second thing I learned was when you use one of these little doodads with the lasers and what not don't put it on the ground move it again put it and move it again it's gonna jack up especially in the garage or concrete actually slants down so it's gonna screw up all your planes so going forward attach this to a spot like a ladder or something in the back that you won't be touching and then go off of that I've had a blast I hope you guys come back and check out other videos hit that subscribe button right over there I got a couple other videos right over here video comes out in Friday we'll see you next time see
