How to Build a Simple Deck

What happens here

The wooden support posts are finished with cedar shiplap, which is glued and screwed into place around the existing posts. A level is used to ensure the shiplap is vertically aligned. For additional stability, the top of the posts are secured into the roof overhang by drilling and screwing into the blocking previously installed in the attic. After the shiplap is complete, the posts are treated with boiled linseed oil to protect the wood and enhance its natural amber color. The final step is to paint the remaining exterior elements of the house to match the newly renovated porch.

Goal: Complete the aesthetic and protective finishing of the deck posts and entire house exterior.

Tools and materials

  • Boiled Linseed Oil — Protecting and enhancing the wood posts

  • Drill/Driver Ryobi — Driving screws
  • Exterior Paint — Painting the rest of the house exterior
  • Spirit Level — Ensuring shiplap is vertically aligned
  • Wood Glue — Adhering shiplap to the posts
  • Wood Screws — Securing shiplap to the posts and posts to the roof blocking
