(16,547 characters)hey guys it's Josh Tony rich farmer welcome to the foreign vlog today got some pretty cool things I wanted to show you around the farm today we're going to take you for a little bit of a tour I'm going to show you our composting toilet setup we have a composting toilet set up for when we first put our place up here I had no place to go to the bathroom so I'm going to show you that we're not using it a whole lot right now but if we camp out or something like that we have it okay that's kind of close to the house then we're going to show you a few other things cat scared me we're going to show you a few other things we're going to take care of the old tobacco barn kind of describe it to you a little bit and show you my worm composting bin okay show you the progress alright so come along with me today on the Stoney Ridge okay guys so here's our composting toilet system basically I got the idea from hiking at Ross Lake in Washington State we did a big man hike with a bunch of guys up there and they had these neat composting toilets which were similar to this so I pretty much took the idea and built my own composting toilet here on the farm in case we need something like this in the future and we needed it when we were building everything here before we had a home so let me show you a little bit about it I'll tell you a little bit about it will kind of walk around it okay guys don't expect this composting toilet to blow your mind with awesome intelligent stuff this is nothing special this is only a stand with a hole dug down here with a toilet seat that I placed on here it's comfortable it's almost like the convertible out how basically we keep a bucket right here we're not using it anymore so our bucket is turned upside down but we put a bucket with sawdust and lime in it you can get lime at any store like I think you can get lime at Lowe's Home Depot Walmart wherever same type of line that you put on your lawn or your garden we use powdered lime and mix it with fertilizer every time you take poopy we throw a little scoopy of lime and fertilizer and basically we just use a coffee cup so we had a coffee cup sitting out here every time you use this composting toilet you don't have to do it when you make urine just when you make the poopie we'll put lime and followed us down in there to help decompose all the matter that we put in there and that's toilet paper too so we only use toilet paper in this so that we're not polluting the land with a bunch of paper basically the toilet paper gets covered up with the sawdust and it all breaks down this thing hasn't probably been used in about six months but when it did get used it was heavily used there were seven guys up here using this thing two or three times a day and actually one guy got sick and used it all day long that's a shout out to you lift whew got myself off track there anyway composting toilet basically I put four posts in the ground all the way around here made almost a square area I have a foot pad for your feet to sit on a deck for your but to sit on and if you need magazines you can put magazines here I don't recommend magazines so sit down on a composting toilet poop drops in and I'll show you the backside where it goes and how it all works the cool thing about the county that we live in here in North Carolina is that you're still allowed to by law have an outhouse which means we're in the deep woods country guys this is the back side of the composting toilet and basically I set for not six I thought it was six but it's four post set and I concreted the post in and we have a hole that was dug out I dug it out probably about this deep right here maybe two feet something like that foot and a half two feet beat and anytime we poop falls down into the composting pits we throw some lime on it it breaks it down immediately in the organic material and back to the earth it goes this composting toilet can host I know seven people for seven days no problem for just us me and my wife this composting toilet would be totally fine so this is your convertible outhouse composting toilet guys pretty rad time for the demonstration portion of our video so we have the composting toilet here we have a guy that might need to poop you might not need to pretend I need to for this video it's going to raise the lid sit down on the lid and we look around and we enjoy mother nature that's what this thing's about convertible outhouse composting toilet so near each farm style baby Mercker baby composted can I tell you guys how happy I am that my beard is finally coming back I shaved it in the winter and that was dumb my face got cold I felt like less of a man guys grow beard you'll feel like a man we're going to take back road right here there's a back way to the tobacco barn think about this when you have a farm when you have a place you've got to have back ways you have to have different ways that people don't know about to get to places on your farm in case you got a run from somebody I call it a bug-out trail this is a bug-out trail to get up to the middle field or take guys I don't want to be that conspiracy theory prepper I'm not that conspiracy theory prepper but I am prepared right here behind me we've got a bug-out trail we got bug-out trails all over the farm okay if there's a point in our lives where we need to get out of here and we need to get out fast we have bug-out trails we also have hiding spots guys there are a lot of crazy people in this world you've got to protect yourself you got to be thinking if you've got land if you've got a place make some bug-out trails be able to get out of Dodge quick keep a backpack and be ready okay guys I'm not a crazy prepper but I'm telling you right now there are crazy people out there that can really hurt you so be prepared for it okay guys I couldn't resist it I had to stop I had to stop and make a little video this little area right here the Sun setting over here behind me it's just beautiful you can just feel the warmth on my face what an awesome place to live what a great place to be we're on the little bug out trail here that goes up to the tobacco bar and it kind of takes you through a little jaunt through the woods for a lack of better terms so me and the dog and the cat actually followed we're all just kind of cruising through the woods here just enjoying life I can't wait to go watch the sunset tonight out on a big field here we've got an awesome mountain view in our big field and we haven't really determined where we're going to build our house but at some point it may be over there where we can get that awesome mountain view we won't be able to see in the woods like this for very long because the leaves are going to start growing on the trees so might as well enjoy it while we can what a peaceful place guys take a second right now and think about how much you know about trees what do you know about trees guys do you know what type of tree you're looking at when you look at a tree I think you should okay do some research get some books learn what types of trees are what learn what they do learn their properties it's something that's important you may not think it's important but it's important if you want to survive in the woods if you want to live in the wood or if you want to own land you need to know about trees and what type of trees you have on your land I'm going to show you some tree bark sounds like an exciting YouTube video I know I'm going to show you some trees and you can identify them just from the bark it amazes me the vast diversity of trees that we have in our forest right here this is the oak tree little guy here that's a white oak tree and you can tell it's a wideout just by the bark this is a sour wood tree and that's what we get a lot of our honey from and there are plenty of sour wood trees here on the farm down through the woods here we've got poplar trees this is a black gum tree which is a beautiful tree it puts off little balls that look like a star pretty neat and then just in this like 20 square foot area I've got such a diversity of trees this is a wild cherry tree okay the wood is beautiful it's got a pink tinge to it and it smells wonderful over here we have a beech tree and this beech tree is kind of akin to the alder tree if you watch the video of me walking the land which should be posted yesterday I'll post it it'll be right here right there we found a beech tree that was just huge it had to be 250 years old what an awesome tree guys watch that video you'll enjoy it guys here are two oak trees okay two different types of oak trees this is a red oak and you can tell the bark the bark is a little bit different it's firmer this is a white oak which has a little bit more flaky bark the white oak puts off a lot of acorns and the deer and turkey love them the red oak is a lot prettier in the fall time it has a red tinge to it tree education for you but guys something really sad has happened I want to talk to you about it we've lost he or the pig he or had been sick for a couple days now and we tried a few things worming him give him some water he was eating really good but he just wasn't getting around like he should be our kind of had a lame leg from the get-go and I feel like he was about a six or seven year old pig anyway I hate to say it but we've lost a or the pig will have to go out and bury in today a pretty sad day on the farm here but I don't know I don't know what to think you know it's life and death and it's just farming guys so you're the pig is passed so guys sorry to have to share this with you but uh we'll go ahead and and bury Eeyore okay cause oftentimes reality of life has to sit in that things don't live forever things don't last forever and you know losing me or the pig is sad but it's just part of life and it's part of farming sometimes you know it's good that a pig like that could live a good long life and have a good place to pass away just unfortunate thing as you know I think we often don't get enough reality in our lives you know guys we we live in the city and we own a guinea pig or a gerbil or a hamster and it dies or goldfish and we just flush it down the toilet and get another one like it's nothing but you know II or meant something to me and I'm really sad that he's gone and I have a little little pig funeral for poor fella all right we're going to talk about the tobacco barn guys this is our tobacco barn the barn was built probably in the early 1900's late 1800s the logs on here were hand hewn which means there were hand cut they were hand chopped and flattened on each side and basically this building was what was used for years and years to dry tobacco inside this building there are poles that run this way and that's what they used to hang the tobacco on to dry traditionally they would start a fire in the bottom back side of this building warm up the building and dry the tobacco before they take it to market so that's what this building is is a building that was used probably I'm going to say from 1910 all the way through to probably the 1970s to dry tobacco and that's the way tobacco was dried in the south I want to walk you in here I don't know how good the lighting is in here but I'm going to take you in here and show you the pier poles and that's what those poles are called pier poles basically those pier poles are still in they're still intact the roof is still intact everything still looks good we're going to convert this into a cool cabin someday and we'll have a place to have guests come and stay so part of our farm plan is to have several cabins throughout the farm where folks can come and stay a little farm bed-and-breakfast nowadays it's hard to make money on a farm so we're going to add a little element of bed-and-breakfast farm stay to our farm so the folks can come and get a taste of the country life if they want to taste of it or just get some peace and quiet come out and relax and watch the deer pretty awesome so let's take you in the tobacco bar and show you what it's all about the tobacco barn is pretty old guys and the door is raggedy and about to fall apart run a little system here take your block down nears inside the tobacco bar so inside here I've got some old straw and you can see right up through here I've got some stuff stored in here but you can see the old pier poles in there and I'm not sure if you can see them very good so here's a pier Pole that we cut out so that we could walk in here because I'm 65 and I couldn't walk and here's another pier Pole right here and basically these are what I'm using for supports to hold things up in this tobacco barn here's another pier Pole right here when we go to build our cabin we'll use those as a support for the second story on our cabin for the lot good I got junk in here everywhere but let's come on out I'm going to show you what I mean by hand-hewn logs okay so right here is a hand-hewn log and what you see is the hue marks where they've chopped the log face flat and you can see it here too basically this is just mud in the south we have a lot of clay and this clay is what they use to pack into the tobacco barn right here and to seal it off so basically every few years you'd have to go in and fix spots that were needing repacked and you just repack mud in it pretty cool pretty simple this old tobacco bar is going to make an awesome cabin okay be sure and subscribe to the vlog here guys and subscribe to my channel you'll get to see this thing transformed into an awesome little guest house and guest cabin and we may even be able to do reservations right through the YouTube channel so it'd be cool if you guys want to get a little taste of North Carolina you can come on down the Stoney Ridge and stay with us maybe neat one thing I know we got to do is clean up all the mess I've got a mess up here it's just where anytime you got a farm you've got a place you got to have a place to put stuff and this has kind of been my go-to place to put stuff once we build it into a cabin there won't be anything up here it'll just be beautiful to hang out look out this field right here behind me nice you guys the last thing I want to show you there was a worm composting bin and right here it is I'm going to open it up and show you how the worms are doing we're going to add some more compost to it the stink she doesn't think she doesn't know about the country yes the do a different level of stinking all right yeah so here we are we'll open up the worm composter here's our worm composted stuff here tip it up and show you the wormy there down in there none in there breaking stuff down right now I can see them wiggling and I also see that we have some fly larvae going on in here and we also have little baby worms like this big so it means that they're reproducing so our worm compost bin will do a little bit better as time goes on go ahead and dump it in there mrs. Stoney Ridge so this is our compost over the last few days and made some sauerkraut and some good stuff okay so we'll go ahead and close up the composter so this isn't the best most awesome worm composting bin you've ever seen I know that it's not supposed to be it's supposed to be simple it's country and it works okay I've got two containers here one container has the worms in it and it has tiny little holes on the bottom the other container doesn't have holes and it has the worm pee pee in it the worm urine is what we want to use on our plants around the house here so that's the reason we're doing this these worms will breed like crazy and whenever we go fishing in the fish pond will always have worms 2-fold will improve this as time goes on but right now the worm bin Stoney Ridge style a little bit on the cheap good time well thanks for coming along with me on today's vlog I really enjoyed having you here I enjoyed taking you around and showing you some things that I love it's really a bummer the ER passed away but we're going to go ahead and go get them and do a little funeral here on the farm for him hope you like to tobacco barn we'll get some better light in there sometime and take you through it but you'll get a good tour go ahead and subscribe to the channel you get a great tour because we're going to convert that into a cool cabin stick around with us guys subscribe to the channel leave me some comments thumbs up you know if you like what you see there's more to come thanks for watching guys come on down the Stoney Ridge with me [Music] by your your good pig buddy
