Stoney Ridge Farmer

What happens here

This video details the process of preparing a hillside on a farm for new grass growth. The steps include receiving and spreading a load of dirt to fill in rough spots, seeding the area with a mix of wheat/rye grass and fescue, harrowing the seed into the soil, picking up rocks, and finally rolling out hay bales as mulch to prevent soil erosion and aid germination. The creator emphasizes the importance of these steps for successful grass establishment on challenging terrain.

morning guys is Josh down here is farmer welcome to the vlog today it's got a big old load dirt coming this morning we've got to smooth out one of the rough spots on the farm got to walk up here and you do that did you poop in your channel did you poop in your kill hey shame on you shame on you shame but I love you I love you sukkah me this movie see guys ridicule does work on dogs that's a little tip from Sony rich farmer oh the guys we're walking up here does it go as soon as they notice me they're going to start screaming that's just part of living in the goat world I guess I can hear the dump truck coming so I got to hurry up get up here the the hill guys I'd like to think that I'm getting farm tough but I don't think I'm getting farm tough I'm getting farm chubby we got to work on this farm chubby so instead of riding the Gator I'm out of breath I set around the Gator everywhere we're going to start walking I think we need to do that unless we got to carry something we're going to start walking guys we're catching the dump truck here you cannot [Music] think you're starving there you go guys real farming good stuff we're going to take the tractor over here we've got the tractor part behind me we're going to smooth out that dirt I'll fill in some of these holes so the goats are doing good behind me does I've got nine goats in case you haven't watch the vlog before I've got nine goats I'm not going to feed them no matter how much they scream today they're calling me to get food and they're finding that if they go back they get food well we're not going to reward that okay so we're going to wait till they stop making noise and then we'll give them food you got to train your animals just like a dog anything and if every time we come up here we feed them when they go back then here we are teaching the goats it's okay to scream for food and it's not okay to scream this is a quiet farm it's quiet place pretty nice and quiet shut up goats in PHP plate case you guys have been interviewed and the order pig your kind of hangs out with the goat does one thing get along with a nice sleeps with them cuddles up to them when they're cold kind of cute York piggy piggy big [Music] you guys we got the dirt all spread out we've got a little more work to do I also got a new addition to the Stoney Ridge family back here we got a trailer from our neighbor pretty cool old-school truck bed type trailer so we're going to take that trailer down to the house and put some air in the tires and we'll use that for hauling rocks and stuff around the farm maybe hay bales or whatever quick look at the new trailer pretty pretty awesome little trailer guys let me show you it looks like an old Jeepster maybe a truck bed here that or some other type of truck bed that they welded some fenders on here tires are decent pretty interesting little welding setup right here we've got going on a little joke in the bed and this whole eye beam was in here we'll use that i-beam for counterweight on the back of our tractor when we pull our hair oh so that's a little trailer gonna pretty cool little score for a hundred bucks can't beat that whoo Stoney Ridge farm on the thrift baby so guys you might be wondering the Stoney Ridge farmer wears the same clothes all day every day no got several of these green shirts and trying to find just the right Stoney Ridge farm shirt if anybody has any suggestions for a brand or type of shirt I'm looking at a distressed type shirt so I can put my logo here and everything like that so we have a farm shirt so anyhow I wear this I put it on in the cool mornings and take it off I don't wear the same thing all day long but most of the time when I do my videos it's fairly early in the morning because I get up get hop we've got a lot more to do on the dirt spot that we just smoothed out okay I've got a specialty Harrow that I pull behind my Gator it's called a drag Harrow or a drag we're going to hook that up to the Gator we're going to actually take wheat see we're going to see the entire area we're going to drag it we're going to seat it again we're going to put grass seed down and then we're going to put our old hay down on top of that we want this place to prolifically grow grass quickly wheat takes about a day to germinate and if you want to get a spot growing really quick throw some wheat down on it boom it'll take off it'll hold that land in place until your fescue has a chance and we'll talk more about that here in a second so let me show you the drag Harrow clearly my mission to find the perfect standing Ridge farmer shirt is not working out this shirt right here is a double leg and as soon as I washed it it shrunk when you're tall I'm six foot five when you're tall your shirts shrink and turn the mid-drift they are not cute I'm not cute in the midriff I'm gonna tell you that right now oh guys before I show you the hair I'm going to go ahead and show you what I've got I've got some wheat and grass seed I'm going to go and load that up on the Gator I have a little system and I'll show you my system of seating really quickly here in just a minute guys I have these bags of wheat I bought these bags of wheat from a farmer in preparation because I knew I would have bare spots that would need some work no get your ball your ball ball it's not a ball good boy get your ball my dogs getting on my nerves foster Transpo so guys I got these bags of wheat in preparation for doing this kind of stuff I knew we'd be clearing some land I knew we'd need some seed I'm going to take a hundred pounds of seed out here and we're going to spread it up on the bare land right on we'll do 50 pounds of seed before we drag it and 50 pounds after and then grass seed guys we use a different kind of grass seeds in most folks this is case this Kentucky 32 okay k 32 grass seed this grass seed is an in to fight free grass seed which doesn't matter to most people but it doesn't matter to you if you have cows and then to fight is something that can make Cal sick and to fight free so we can sell our hay for a little bit more and it's a little bit better quality fescue that's your little grass seed lesson for today it's a little more expensive to buy but it's worth it guys are riding up here and I just noticed once again the sway bar on the rear of my Gator is broken I am NOT a fan of the John Deere Gator I'm going to tell you that right now I use this thing every day and it breaks it breaks it breaks it breaks it shouldn't be breaking like this I'm most likely going to get a Kubota RTV next time look for our video in the future here I'm going to do a video on top reasons to not buy the John Deere Gator I'm utterly disappointed john deere contact me if you want to work this out and I won't do I hate the Gator video but your equipment isn't holding up okay it's not holding up give me one to work on the farm and I'll let you know what you need to do to make a farmer happy contact me John Deere let's see what we can do so inevitably every time I work with this thing I've got to get it unpainted just par for the course here when I should have done was untangle it before I put it up we get this thing out in the open so you can see what it is this drag Harrow latches over the ball on your hitch I have an extension on my hitch so it gets it out from under the Gator and basically you've got two sides one side has prongs on it and that helps to dig in a little bit and the other side is basically just like a chain almost it's like a giant chain and we'll drag this over and smooth out the land after we put our first coat of wheat seed on so guys I've got a little system here we take a bag of weed go for it pour it in this pot and this is actually wheat and rye grass okay I'll show you what it looks like can't hurt it goes great it sprouts really quickly germinate quickly and keeps our land from washing pretty good stuff so my system is like hoarding this pot right here pour it in this pot right here and then I can handle it a little bit better and then I pour it in my feeder the handy dandy cedar right here you put over your head basically crank this little crank right here and it'll start slinging seeds I'll show you [Music] it doesn't work the wheat seeds are too big the wheat and rye seeds I guess are too big Plan B we're just going to broadcast spread it with our hands it's well worth with grassy but evidently the wheat seed is just so big it won't fit through there bummer my arm is going to be sore from going Shh [Music] we're going to take our five gallon bucket we're just going to spread it out it's like this okay that's basically it so let me get busy so food for thought when you're spreading grass seed on a hillside you want to feed it a little bit heavier and fertilize it a little bit heavier on the upper side because water will wash down your fertilizer and your grass seed we're not spreading any fertilizer on this we're just going to throw the seed down guys I made the decision to do something a little different than I planned I'm going to go ahead and put this k32 grass seed down one coat down and drag it with the Harrow and then after I do that I'm going to coat it one more time really you're only supposed to have to use about 25 pounds to the acre maybe 30 pounds maybe 40 pounds depending on what you read we're going to use probably three-quarters of this 50-pound bag right here and seed this fairly heavily but I'm going to put seed on it first and then drag it over seat it again just to be sure and do a good job here's what the grass seed looks like okay if you're receiving your own lawn or if you're seeding a bare spot this little contraption right here has been very handy for me I'll post a link down below where you can get one of these guys basically just crank this and it just fling a seed it's pretty awesome memory spread and grass seed or straw you've got to take into account the wind the wind is coming from this direction we're going to start at the top of the hill and work our way down so we're all done spreading this area is heavily seeded okay you do have to worry about birds birds will come in and eat a whole lot of your seed turkeys will I guarantee I haven't seen a turkey all year wild turkey but I'll guarantee you I'll see wild turkeys now so guys the next step in this process we're going to take the dragon we're going to drag it really good and after that we'll pick up rocks something nobody talks to you about in farming picking up rocks I know we've spent at least a hundred hours picking up rocks just part of farming guys [Applause] [Music] guys what you may notice and maybe thinking right here is that when you do this you're dragging the grass seed and the grass seed is kind of finding those low spots I've seated before when we did our lawn down here and I totally wish I'd have done this the grass finds the low spots the low spots are where it washes it just totally makes sense the grass sprouts in the low spots the low spots don't wash biggity BAM you got the problem solved no more washing so we're going to get finished up here now it's time to get up Rock whoo guys that's it for the rocks and I'm thirsty I'm picking up rocks for about an hour and 10 minutes now cut farming ain't easy just want to let you know farming is not easy well done so the next step we're going to get the tractor we're going to take three round bales roll them out right here and spread them out on the land I lied the next step is we're going to oversee this one more time so I want to show you that we'll just go get the hay bales and get them stacked up here and ready to roll [Applause] so the next step in this process is we're going to take the old hay here we're going to roll it out over the bare land so it doesn't wash Gerber Center Drive awesome tool that was kind of what we wanted but not really what we wanted is hey is so crappy and full of sticks that it just wouldn't come unroll it just took off I don't know if I really should be putting this on my high quality fescue that I just sewed it anyway but it'll help stop from washing let's try the next bale here and see how it does can't say I didn't try guys it's okay to fail some parts of farmer in this failure well guys looks like we've got it all done this has been a long day here we've got our grass feed down we've got our wheat seed down we got our straw down we spread the dirt we smooth the dirt we picked up the rocks and we got it all looking good grass should start coming up here in about ten to twelve fifteen days and the wheat seed should start coming up within the next day or two so that's it this is Josh Stoney Ridge farmer guys thanks for watching the vlog stick with me watch the farm grow I appreciate you whoo don't forget to leave me a comment if you like what you see [Music] my oh my you my friend this is my friend I friend buddy my little friend my best friend to
