Head Flashing 101: School is in session ✏️📚

What happens here

With the marks clearly visible, use a pair of tin snips to carefully cut the metal. First, cut along the innermost perpendicular line across the top flange only, stopping at the bend of the L-shape. Next, make a diagonal cut from the end of that first cut down to the bend of the L-shape, effectively removing a small triangular piece of the top flange. This creates a notch that will allow the remaining metal to fold neatly around the corner without buckling. Finally, cut the excess length of the bottom flange straight up to the original main length mark, separating it from the notched top section, thus creating a tab on the bottom flange that will fold around.

Goal: Remove specific sections of the flashing to enable a clean, folded corner.

Tools and materials

  • L-shaped Metal Flashing — The material being cut to form the corner
  • Tin Snips — Cutting the metal flashing precisely along the marked lines
