Measure and Mark the Flashing for Corner Fabrication
At 0:00 in
Head Flashing 101: School is in session ✏️📚
What happens here
Begin by measuring the required length of the L-shaped metal flashing using a tape measure. Place a mark with a pencil at this determined length. Next, use a speed square or combination square to draw a straight, perpendicular line across the top flange of the flashing at this marked length. This will serve as the main cut line for the end of the flashing. Then, from this primary cut line, measure back a short distance (e.g., 0.75 to 1 inch, depending on the depth of the flashing) and mark another perpendicular line. This second line defines the portion of the top flange that will be notched and bent to form the corner, creating a neat cap.
Goal: Precisely mark the L-shaped metal flashing to prepare for cutting and forming a clean corner.
Tools and materials
- L-shaped Metal Flashing — The primary material being fabricated for corner trim or drip edge
- Pencil — Marking the measurements and lines on the metal flashing
- Speed Square — Drawing precise perpendicular lines across the flashing
- Tape Measure — Measuring the required length and marking the cut/fold lines on the flashing
